Healthy Tips for a Healthy Holiday!

I've been thinking a lot about the Holidays. They are fast approaching. There are invitations to send out, turkeys to buy, gifts to wrap...menus to contemplate. That last one has been in the back of my mind and believe me, I'd LOVE to avoid it! The Holidays are a precious time of year...but some of us are bound to get wrapped up in the Holiday Cheer and fall off of the healthy wagon. I can almost smell those devious deserts just itching to sabotage my healthy streak! Alas, I have a theory. If we prepare ourselves now for temptation, rather than leaving ourselves vulnerable and ill prepared to turn down that buttery bowl of gravy as it's being passed down the table...We'll have more chance for success!
Here are some Tips to help you stay on "The Wagon" this Year!:
1. Eat a small, healthy meal BEFORE you attend any holiday parties. That way you'll be free to just nibble a bit on some of the healthier options. You won't feel like you've missed out on the meal, but you're appetite will be satisfied enough to prevent an all out gorging.
2. Trim back the trimmings! Go all out when Decking the Halls with Holiday Cheer, Lights and Glitter...but accessorize with care when it comes to nuts, cheeses, spreads, butters and gravy. They don't really make the dish taste better...they just disguise the flavor. So, if you don't really like the taste of something, pass it up rather than coating it with fat that you'll regret later!
3. Hold a Drink in Your Dominant Hand (it won't be so easy to keep shoveling cheese and crackers in if you're holding a drink!)
4. Alternate between Alcoholic and Non-Alcoholic drinks. Alcoholic Beverages tend to be high in calories...so alternate between that Merlot and the bottle of water. You'd be surprised at how much less vino you end up drinking!
5. Skip the Appetizers: You could preferably chew a piece of gum to occupy your mouth. However if you need a little snack before the main course go for the veggies, salsas and fruits.
The Holidays are full of temptation when it comes to maintaining a Healthy Diet. Even the most disciplined Dieters will meet their match this season! I hope that these tips will help you, encourage you and motivate you to stick with your healthy diet. You Can Do This!!
To Your Success,
Ashley Miller
