I just started The Great Adventure - A Journey Through the Bible!  I think this is THE BEST approach to bible study I've ever heard!  Obviously I am very excited about it because it is very comprehensive.  Here's the breakdown:

Your materials will be a timeline chart, breaking up Salvation History into 12 periods:  Early World, Patriarchs, Egypt & Exodus, Desert Wanderings, Conquest & Judges, Royal Kingdom, Divided Kingdom, Exile, Return, Maccadean Revolt, Messianic Fulfillment, The Church.

The books of the bible are of two kinds:  Narrative and supplemental.  Only 14 books are narrative and should be read in this sequence:  Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Joshua, Judges, Samuels I & II, Kings I & II, Ezra, Nehemiah, I Maccabees, Luke  & Acts.

The other books are secondary and supplemental to these.

We just started this, and the great thing about it is that anyone can lead these bible studies, because the materials are so self-explanatory.  And there is a DVD as well.  It's an excellent study, try it!
