I have never understood the whole buying as many presents as you possibly can so you can prove to your kids and family that you love them. Then you have to hear ungrateful kids screaming "I didn't want this!" and then catch your brother in law's girlfriend in the return isle and over hear her being snobby because it isn't from a "decent" store.
So this year my Black Friday is going to be spent at Jo-Ann Fabric. I am going to buy fabric and patterns. For the girls/ women they are getting cute aprons. For the boys they are getting blankets.
My son has been getting clothes, blankets, and a few toys every Christmas. When I was growing up I got sewing tools, sewing machine, fabric, and clothes. I appreciated them so much! Sure sometimes as a young woman I wished I got some of the really nice stuff the other girls got. But then I watched them throw them to the side and were bored with them. Yet when I got my first CD player I treated it like gold until it broke down when I was 15. Then I got my upgraded one.
My mom was a Marine and so I got one of the first CD players from Japan back in the late 80's. It meant a lot to me. And so when I had my son I decided he would get that same education. I told my four year old that he is getting a blanket this Christmas with clothes and he told me "YAY!" I have tried to play the game of who got the better gifts but as a medical student... I just don't have the money! So I am making them.
If people don't like it... fine. But at least they will have a blanket or an apron to use. And I can promise they will use those longer than the gifts they got from some store.
P.S. If they sell it at least I helped them with money and they should tell me how fast they sold it. Maybe I can make money on the side making aprons and blankets.
Comments:
My early Christmas gift this year was a sewing class lol. So I know what I am doing... sort of tehehehe. But from my halloween costume I made I am sure it will turn out very nice.
Ty :). I am graduating this March... and like a psycho going back next fall to BSU for the Radiology degree. Six years of college... oi.
Good for you. Somewhere along the way society has forgotten the true meaning of Christmas-the birth of Jesus. Due to the economy being the way it is and also being unemployed x-mas is going to hard.
If you should happen to hear someone making a snide remark I would remind them that it is the thought that counts.
My mom and I were just talking about people thinking that x-mas is all about gifts and whoever gives them the most or the best loves them most. When I was growing up we got clothes and 1 item that we really wanted. (from my mom and dad) grandma always got us one thing but my dads side of the family tried to spoil us. And in a way they did. BUT I did appreciate the things I got from my family and I love my moms side so much for just wanting the holidays as a day for us to be together and not about gifts.
I try to teach my children the same thing but their grandmother on their dads side buys them each about 50 things (I kid you not) and my dads side get them clothes but some expensive frikken toys. My children love getting clothes and love wearing new outfits (whenever I have the money I always get them clothes and sometimes a small toy). My mom would like to boycott christmas tho...
I am one of those odd Mom's whose kids really do like what they get, and it is never that much....Maybe thats why they like them they appreciate what they do receive.....Off topic, but my 8 yr old hates it at birthday parties for friends when the other kids act ungrateful.......

I hear ya, girl... most of my gifts will be homemade this year as well. Those, plus framed portraits of my DD will round it out!
I still have to do some practice with my sewing machine before I can do aprons or anything, as I am JUST starting out with it.
Good luck in med school!
