This is a show I just watched on TV tonight... Its a documentary by Sam Dunn (also known for creating the documentary "Metal - A Headbanger's Journey"...which I'd also recommend seeing). He has a degree in anthropology and studies heavy metal culture. In this show, he travels around the world to find out what metal is like in different countries...especially ones where you wouldn't expect to find metal.
This is a full-length show, probably an hour long, but I really hope some people will watch it, even if you don't like metal. Its not just about metal, its about how everyone in the world is connected, no matter how much our governments, religion, etc. turn us against each other. Even in cultures that seem completely backwards to us, there is a group of people who need to rebel, to think for themselves, to be free from the chains of a worn-out way of life and from the injustices of their governments. These people think just like us, have similar problems, and similar morals...even if they live in a country that is considered our "enemy". It really makes you stand back and realize that we are all in the same situation, its just the few people in our governments that try to pit us against each other. No matter how oppressed and strict a society is, there will always be this subculture who are brave enough to speak out for what they believe. This made me realize that human nature cannot be suppressed no matter what the conditions, that we will progress in our thinking despite those who want to hold us back. It made me feel kinda hippie inside...LOL!
