When we decorate for the past 4 years we put up a blue strand of lights, just solid blue.
The reason behind this is that when my son Elijah was 2 we had just left the Christmas light display at the park and were driving home. We passed this house that had nothing but blue lights.
He gasped and said MOMMY LOOK BLUE LIGHTS!!! I WANT BLUE LIGHTS!!!!

He did not know that there was Christmas lights with just blue which blue is his favorite color.
I told him ok honey tomorrow we will get blue lights.
Later that night he came in my room about midnight and said mommy please I really want blue lights in my room.
So we got up got bundled up and went in to town to the 24 hour Wal-Mart and got a box of blue lights. We went home and I put them up in his room.
Since then every year we put up one strand of solid blue lights.

NO, we have not built any traditions yet except the stocking of course, but the kids are only 3 and 4 and I never had Christmas growing up, so we will have to build our own over time, the blue lights are special though, thanks for sharing.

Awwww, that is so sweet!  It is the little things that really make the holidays special isn't it? We have tons of traditions but some of the small ones that I think you are asking about is that my daughter has a collection of miniature nativity scenes that she loves to arrange and rearrange every year. My son has a collection of animated type stuffed animals that play music and dance etc. They look forward to finding those in the boxes every yr when we get the them down from the attic to decorate. Also, we have a Lionel train set that plays Christmas music that the kids assemble themselves that go around the tree. They used to spend hours under the tree having their action figures and polly pockets riding on the train!  They are kind of big for that now but it's still their fave part of the tree and they have to turn it on to show everyone who comes over during the holidays!  I love Christmas!  : )

My Grandparents decorated with blue lights for the longest time because one of the grandkids thought it was neat. I always thought it was funny, because they put lights on everything that was standing still! Looked like Smurf world! AND their last name is Green. LOL! We don't have any weird traditions yet. Just that the kids decorate the tree with my help.

The first Christmas after my eldest (who was Feline-American) died, my daughter wanted to hang his stocking as usual, too.  In an inspired move, Santa left a movie and a few other things for the entire family ostensibly from him.  This was a huge hit, and has continued as such.  But it has also evolved into the idea of a Family Stocking, as well.  The family stocking is one of those huge, wide nearly four-footers, that Santa fills with movies, treats, sometimes fun small appliances (we got a cotton-candy machine one year) -- things for us to do and enjoy together as a family. The kids all do get a couple of individual things, but we mostly concentrate on this now.  Were I to get a re-do, I would have started the family stocking idea when they were much smaller, on a similar small scale building more each year  -- pretty much as we did, only years earlier and on a happier start.

Another tradition is my kids both have three "daughters" -- my stuffed grandchildren.  (Yes, I did somehow think they would be out of, IDK, elementary school before making me a grandmother, but anyway.)  We had a few years with incredibly tight budgets.  The "girls" had a small fireplace their stockings were always hung on, and I discovered that if careful attention was paid to getting inexpensive but way cool tiny, detailed things and small collectibles for the the girls, the human children were so enchanted and awed and amazed by this they barely noticed how skimpy the rest of Christmas might be.  They are both teenagers now, but both still expect and look forward to the gifts their girls get -- of course their tastes and likes have changed and Santa does try and keep abreast of that...last year the grandchildren got Starbucks cards which thrilled their parents a great deal.  Despite being 15 now, my daughter still looks forward to her girls getting the Build-a-Bears from the McDonald's promotion, too.  Christmas in miniature is a huge part of the celebration at our house.

The night before Christmas we bake cupcakes then everyone decorates one and gives it as a gift to someone else at breakfast the next morning. It's Christmas! Why not have a cupcake for breakfast ya know? The fun part is not knowing who's decoration you're getting until the next day.

our tradition for Christmas is to serve fondue. We have the melty cheese with different kinds of breads and veggies, a chocolate fondue with fruits, pretzles & anything that goes good with chocolate. And hot oil to cook several kinds meat  that are stuck on a skewer.  It goes out around 2 pm and everyone grazes as they get hungry.  We did this because of my DH's swiss heritage (and we couldn't agree on my traditions & his traditions so we started from scratch with our tradition). The kids love it and really look forward to dipping the day away.

We love to look at Christmas lights, something my mom started with us kids and now MY kids LOVE it too. About a week before Christmas we drive around to look at all the lights, we go slow and just take it all in as much as the kids want to do. Another one is making sugar cookies for Santa, my son will make the cut outs then decorate them. His favorite thing is putting on LOTS of sprinkles LOL

Not really, I dont think using a Rubber Tigger Toy as a tree topper is a tradition cause its only our second year. So really nothing here yet. The boys stockings hang in the same spot this year. the pins are still in the wall just with other thing on them so they dont get moved. im a very picky person, our tree is fake so when i took it down i just put it away still with just about everything on it.

That is so cute!

We buy a special ornament every year with the year on it. They usually resemble something big that happened during the year, like the year we bought our first home. Our ornament for that year is a little house. When our kids were born, they each have an ornament with their names and birthdates on them. When I got a cat, we have a pet ornament. For any of the years where nothing really spectacular happened, we just buy a special ornament with the year on it.

I can't wait until we're old and our tree will be filled with all our special ornaments. I hope our kids and grandkids ask about them and then we can tell them about each year and what happened.
