So I hear patience is a virtue! Well it is one virtue I seem to have an opportunity to practice everyday. With five children I am slowly learning how to pick my battles and win!
But these days my tweens seem to testing my limits. My daughter is 11 and she thinks she is sixteen. Yesterday she had the nerve to tell me "but I'm grown" when I told her she is not allowed to have a boyfriend. I swear everything inside me wanted to explode and inform her just "how grown" she is not. But instead I decided to be patient with her and I will convince her over time, ans show her she has a long way to go! While I do this I will continue to cross my fingers and hope she realizes trusting mom has it's pluses!
I know to some that sounds absurd but yelling at her only accomplishes two things 1. She has an emotional meltdown= no longer listening! and 2. She misses the message. So instead I have decided to keep talking to her about this in subtle ways. I will patiently parse out the message overtime instead of overloading her all at once.
It seems no matter what the issue at hand is I'm having every opportunity to practice patience. I can't make them see things my why, all I can do is make the rules, enforce them, and patiently stand by and watch them grow up.
I think as a parent this is the hardest fact to accept. We can not make all of are childrens choices for them. We can direct them to the right choice but as they get older and their not with us 24/7 all we can do is hope that what we're teaching them is sticking. Then when it isn't sticking we have to find it within ourselves to be patient enough to continue to guide them and not give up or wear out!
Right now not wearing out is a constant up hill battle. I swear kids are good at wearing you down as well!
