This is the birth story for my first set of twins: Madelynn Rebecca and Mackenna Grace!
My husband and I started trying for a second child about a year after Liam was born; I desperately missed having a baby around and my husband, I think dispite himself at first really wanted another one too. It took us a long time to actually get pregnant, in fact we got pregnant the same month that Liam turned 2. A few months previous to the twins conception I went in for my regular check up with my OB/GYN. I told her that we were trying to concieve but that my cycles were extremely irregular. She schedualed me for a vaginal ultrasound, an experience that was not what I would call alot of fun, the tech told me that my overies had a "pearling" effect. Which is a tell-tale sign in PCOS (Poly-cycstic Overian Syndrome). They took blood and informed me that I would probably require some type of assistance with getting pregnant. About a week later they called me back and informed me that infact my blood work did not support the PCOS theory; but regardless they would try the same tactic if I went a few more months with out a pregnancy. I have to say that we did not start actively "trying" until the month that we concieved. But we were not doing anything to prevent a pregnancy and we were having intercourse around the time that I believed I was ovulating. In November I called the Dr and told her that I wanted to be put on Clomid if I didn't come up pregnant in the next few mts; they had given me options of other medications but I had desided that Clomid was the best option for me.
My husband and I continued on not activly trying but not preventing either. In this time my husband also got a new job at one of the local prisons, which offered insurence, which of course we were over the moon about. The week of January I called my doctor when I started my period, and told her I wanted the clomid she gave me the precription and I took it as directed. A few weeks later I came in for an ultrasound to see how many folicals I had. The sonogram showed that there were 2. I asked the tech hopefully if that met I could have twins ( I had always wanted twins since I was a little girl) She told us that there was a possiablility but that there was also a chance that I wouldn't get pregnant at all.
Two weeks later I went back for my blood test; I was almost sure I was pregnant. Just like the first time there was something in me that told me this was the month that I was going to get pregnant. I wasn't disapointed!! I was Pregnant!! and my levels where high!! They told me I should come back in in 2 weeks for another ultrasound. So 2 weeks later I came back on Saint Patricks Day I remember laying there on the table and looking at the screen. and I remeber exactly the words that the tech used.
"Oh! There THEY are!" I looked up and it was very clear 2 sacs 2 heart beats. My childhood dream was coming true. TWINS!! But Ironically I wasn't as happy as I thought I would be. I was terrified from the moment that I found out about them that something would happen and I would lose them. I was afraid that some day soon the morning sickness would start up again and I would be confined to a hospital bed on a PIC line. I wasn't wrong. The morning sickness did start up again; but this time it was a little easier to deal with. Pretty much as long as I kept food in my stomach and ate when I was hungry I was fine.
I remember being so happy when I went back for my second ultrasound and discovered that it was 2 little girls. Liam was there with me and he was smiling from ear to ear, I don't think he had any idea that he was about to gain to little siblings who were going to take away his time and attention from mommy. At that point he was just a grinning proud big brother.
The doctor schedualed my c-section for Oct 30 but told me she didn't think I was going to make it that far with Twins. I would be 38 weeks, Full term for twins, according to her ( I have heard from other twin moms that 36 weeks is full term). Though she had told me she didn't think I would make it, I was determined and I pushed onward. The pregnancy was difficult I felt huge and cumbersome and I really just wanted them out. I had been having contractions on and off for a few weeks, when the morning of Oct 30 finally came. I was up with my best friend/ room-mate watching a Roseanne Marathon of all things when my water broke at 1:30 AM; I ran into the bedroom where my husband was relaxing after a long evening at work. I shook him awake and said "Come On we gotta go to the Hospital." he looked up at me and said "Honey we aren't suppost to be there for another 6 hours!" and I remember yelling at him "NO my water broke and I'm having contractions! We have to go NOW!" This got him moving.
We called my parents and his parents and told them to meet us at the Hospital. By the time we got there my contractions were every 2 minutes and lasting between 45 seconds and a minute. I was terrified and worried that they wouldn't be able to do a c-section with my uterus contracting like that. The nurse checked me and told me that I was at a 6 but that baby A was in a Transverse position and they would have to be delieved by c-section. They took me right in gave me my epideral and Madelynn Rebecca was born at 2:45 AM followed a minute later by her sister Mackenna Grace at 2:46 AM. My little day before Halloween Twitches!!
