Life & Times in Texas

Thank goodness it is all over!

And we did not send anyone to the hospital!

Almost!

But we caught it in time!

Prior to our Friday Thanksgiving with my family, my husband and I prepared to make the dressing and we were going to be smoking the Turkey so we needed to boil some chickens to use for the dressing and we did all of this on Tuesday.  We deboned the chicken and I poured the chicken broth in 2 jars and screwed on the lids and left them on the counter to cool.  Later that night my husband started boxing everything up that we would be taking with us and in went the jars of broth.

We left on Wednesday evening for the 2 hour drive and to spend a whole day with my parents before my other sisters and their families arrived later that day.  My husband, the perfectionist he is just left the box in our truck, I mean we weren't going to be making the dressing until Friday, right.  Why put so much in the house right now.

So, Friday came upon us and he was merrily smoking that Turkey and a ham and decided to come in get the dressing started.  I had bought 2 containers of Chicken broth and brought those with us, just in case.  But, my husband loves to make the dressing and is usually metaculious about it.

I was back and forth between the kitchen and the dining room where he was putting all of the ingriedients together and taste testing as he went along.  Finally it was all together and he put it in the oven.

After about an hour one of my sisters was asking my mother about the "smell".  They were talking between each other that it could possibly be the septic system.  Well, we live in the country also and have had septic problems before and so I knew that "smell" and that was not what I was smelling.  As I walked outside for a bit to talk with other family members I walked back in and that "smell" was right inside the door.  The first thought to mind was "that wasn't a dressing smell", I should be smelling sage and dressing and that just "reeked".  I went into the kitchen and opened the oven door to check the dressing and that "smell" came billowing out.  I had my sister smell and she couldn't tell if that was the same scent that she had for the septic or not.  About that time my husband came in and I started asking him what all did he put in the dressing. As he went down the list he mentioned the "jars" of chicken broth, and that was where I stopped him.

I had forgotten about the jars (out of sight, out of mind), he said he wanted to use the "good stuff" before he used the store bought!

BINGO!  Can you say Salmanela was cooking in the oven, just waiting for everyone!

I immediately went in and took out the dressing and he immediately took it out and dumped it!

I was heartbroken to say the least, now we had no dressing!

Yet, we didn't poison anyone either!  The bright side.

Just then I asked if he had any left over cornbread (I remembered we had baked 3 pans) and he said YES, it was too much and he didn't use all of it.  So we hurried (although 99% of dinner was all ready now), but we were able to put together a small pan of dressing and cook it while we were still waiting on that darned smoked turkey that was still outside!

So, the small pan turned out to be plenty.

We did not poison anyone this time around!

And we returned home later that evening to turn around and go to his mothers the next day for another round.

Now, I am so thankful that we caught this in time but then again we are both trying to figure out why neither of us have felt good now for 2 days after his mothers thanksgiving!    Oei Vei!
