Why must it happen so early in the morning? Experts say eat a balanced breakfast within an hour of awakening. Who are these people? Surely they do not have children to get up and ready for anything, or children that are awake before their (the experts) eyes are open. I can not even imagine asking the dog to wait until I have had a warm, balanced delicious breakfast.
Weekend leisurely breakfasts used to be a treat, french toast with cinnamon, orange juice, wheat toast, jelly, but definitely not within an hour of waking! I am misty eyed trying to remember.
What do I have for breakfast? If lucky a hot liquid (chocolate is my choice unless I remember the sugar content) a muffin, if I have been to the bulk store the day or two before, a protein bar if I think I want to grab something healthy. (Hey- it is the thought that counts.)
Most moms are careful to prepare something more organized or substantial for the children, and maybe hubby gets toast, but themselves? "I'll grab something later" is a frequent phrase.
I do enjoy oatmeal or cream of wheat. I grew up a cereal child. Donuts were reserved for camping trips. I would kill for a power breakfast even if I had to dress up for it, well not the shoes. Or maybe not.
Breakfast hurried and disorganized with the family is better than anywhere else.
Comments:
I eat breakfast every day, and so does my son. My husband is not a breakfast eater. I *have* to eat something when I wake up - I am just so hungry. I usually eat a cheese stick. Then I make something for my son and myself later. Sometimes on the weekends DH wants breakfast, and then I make a feast! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
I can't see it happening within an hour of my waking. I try to make at least a shake to give me a boost ---it is fast, a liquid to drink and full of vitamins and minerals.

I agree with you for as a mom of three teens I usually forget about eating breakfast because I am in a hurry to get them off to school. Initially breakfast was not a big thing for me as you stated per say especially when its done in a hurried fashion and as moms we think of ourselves last if not least.
Now, suffice to say, as I ripen with maturity I realize I need some form of something; say a boiled egg, banana or bran oats to jump start my morning or else I start to unravel. Not a good thing since this thread must stay on this bobbin!
