Bellamie Mashay made her debut on 12/22/09 at 2:22 pm weighing 7lbs 6oz and is 20 1/2 inches long.  I arrived at the hosptial for induction on the 21st.  The induction began about 12:30.  The doctor called off the induction that evening when Bellamie began showing positive signs of contraction distress.  With a combination of the compliations of Bellamie's distress which may result in an emergency c-section and the problems I have with my intestines being attached to my abdominal wall the doctor wanted to wait until the morning of the 22nd to continue with the induction because if I had to have an emergency c-section he was calling a surgeon to stand in with him incase my intestines were to be cut.

On the morning of the 22nd the doctor came in, broke my water and discovered that Bellamie had pooped inutero, and then started the pitocin.  Doc gave the nurses the instructions that if Bellamie showed any signs of distress to call him immediately.  Doc told us that at this point he didn't know if we were going to be able to deliver vaginally or not.  Bellamie at 38wks was close to being too large for me to have; apparently I have very small parts thought that area, lol- lucky DH huh?. We knew that if we had to go for emergency c/s and I didn't have an epidural that I would be knocked out and DH wouldn't get to be present for the delivery.  About an hour into the induction Bellamie's heart rate began to fall.  I changed positions and her heart rate came back up.  This made DH and I really begin talking abotu what we should do about an epidural.  I was hooked to internal monitors so Icouldn't get up to move to help with labor.  There was a very high risk of having a c/s and I didn't want to be put to sleep in an emergency and have to miss it when all I would have to do in the first place is have the epidural in preparation for a c/s.  The less stress I was under the less stress Bellamie would be under.  We talked it over with our family and the nurses.  For the sake of Bellamie I ordered an epidural; I didn't know that it was also going to be for my sake as well.

The anesteseologist (sp?) came in and began to preform the epi.  He checked my spine and asked if I have skoliosis (sp?) and I do.  He said, "This may be tough to do and there is a possibility I can't do it."  It took him 3 attempts to get the epi put in place.  My heart rate began going up and my blood pressure down.  I passed out from sitting up right.  Sitting up made my blood pressure go down to 92/43 and laying down in certain positions made Bellamie's heart rate drop as low as the upper 40s so I had to keep changing positions to keep her heart rate up.  This was not a good situation. The nurses made me as comfortable as possible, turned out the lights and would not allow anyone in to see me.  In the waiting room my MIL, FIL, and SIL sat scared senseless.

At 2:00 pm I was dilated and ready to push.  We still were unsure if she would fit through the birth canal.  We were also scared of how laying on my back to push may affect Bellamie.  The nurses got everything ready before they rolled me over to begin pushing.  I began pushing and within 10 minutes Bellamie began crowning.  The nurse was calling for my doc still unsure if she would fit under my pubic bone.  Within minutes doc was there but Bellamie's head was halfway out but she wouldn't come out any further, she was stuck due to severe shoulder distorcia.  Doc began calling for a peditrician stat and barking commands to the nurses.  I had to have a very large episotomy and still it was everything the doctor and nurses could do to get her out.  She came out grey, lifeless, and not breathing. The delivery room was silent.  Doc whispered, "She's breathing" as he passed her off to the nurses.  They began working vigorously with her but the room was still silent.  Doc was working trying to sew me back up and tell the nurses what to do.  Finally, there was a tiny whimper.  I could only see a small portion of Bellamie, enough to know she was beginning to turn pink.  The nurse told Doc that nothing was broken on Bellamie as far as she could tell.  The first five minutes of Bellamie's life seemed like a silent eternity.  Finally Bellamie was well enough that I could hold her.  She is beautiful!

Doc said, "You'd be a f-ing idiot to try to deliver vaginally again! I will never deliver you vaginally again."  (Don't be offended by his comments.  That is how he is and he is very passionate about his job but still down to earth.  I love my ob/gyn just the way he is.) Doc doesn't get worked up over much.  He deals with complicated pregnancies every day.  He also went on to say it was the hardest and scariest delivery that he had done in many years.  As he said, "She was hanging on by barely a thread but she hung on."

After a day of fighting for mine and Bellamie's lives, having a very hard delivery, and almost loosing my precious baby girl I can say its a day I will never forget.  I have a perfectly healthy baby girl and she is beautiful.  She has a severly bruised head (not from forcepts but my bones) and arm (from the severe shoulder distorcia).  Due to the bruising she has jaundice but its going away quickly.  I have the best Christmas present anyone could ask for.  I get to take my Bellamie home tomorrow- Christmas Eve.  A day 8 other doctors told me would never come and 1 said yes it would- tomorrow's that day we always dreamed of.  Merry Christmas!
