OK....here we go.....
Week 35 (the week of Christmas)
I have an OB appointment...my cervix is changing...down to 2.8cm. Still nothing to worry about. They usually worry when it gets below 2 cm. I am having contractions regularly, but no pain, so I go on with life! I have 2 NST tests....Monday is fine contracting but not a whole lot while I was there. Then comes Thursday (Christmas Eve). My bp is up, and I am contracting every 3-4 minutes...she checks my cervix (manually vs ultrasound). Says she can feel babies head, but that my cervix is behind, so she cant really tell. So, I go home...contractions are becoming more noticeable, but I make it thru Christmas Eve with family, and Christmas morning with family at my house. I am still contracting, but not very regularly, but I am starting to become more aware of them. I decide not to go into the hospital because I know that I have another NST on Monday again.
Week 36
I make it to Monday's appointment. The girls are still head down, nice amount of fluid around each one, but my bp is still up. A call to the dr, and he orders blood test for PIH (pregnancy induced hypertension). Then the contractions start...every 2 minutes, sometimes shorter. The dr wants my cervix checked while waiting for PIH results. She says I am 3 cm....OMG I say!!! I know my body, and I know that I am going into labor. They decide not to wait for the blood results, and send me off to L and D. They hook me up to the monitors (this is always a challenge). Dr comes and checks me after about an hour, and now I am 3-4cm. He says to wait another hour or two to see if I progress any more to decide if I will stay or not. At this point he says there is a 50/50 chance I am actually in labor. Contractions have not slowed, and when he checks me again, I am 5cm. Now he says 80/20 chance I am in labor. Says he will be back to check me in 4 hours (midnight)....at this point I am still 5cm. He says we should break my water (Now I'm scared)....he says now that my labor seems to have slowed, but he will re-check me in another 4 hours (4am). So, in he comes at 4am, I am still 5 cm. he again recomends me have my water broke....I was hoping to have the epi first because I know what is about to happen! I agree to break my water, and of course the pain sets in within the hour. I ask for my epi, and it got to me in perfect time...I had it in place by 6:30am. Then my husband says..."did you feel that one??"...NO!!! "Oh, that was a big one!!". Of course he is talking about the contractions that I am not feeling anymore (thank you epi!). The nurses have had a hard time keeping both babies on the monitor the whole time...they would take turns trying to get them on. They have lost baby B (again), so a nurse decides to have an ultrasound done to check her position. Dog gone it if she didnt turn breech!!!! Now I am terrified!!! At this time, the dr who broke my water is off, and a new dr is on. I talk to her, tell her my birth history, and thankfully she agrees to allow me to try a vag delivery with an aversion. THANK YOU GOD!!! She says that as long as the babies and I are OK she will let me go for it. So, she checks my at 7:30 am, and I am complete. I must deliver in the OR just in case I need a c-sect, so they prepare the double set up, and wheel me in there. Right away the anestesiologist (sp??) starts numbing me more and more for the possible c-sect. The dr. says "PUSH"...here comes baby A...ONE PUSH, and she is out. She is perfect, but TINY!!! They take her and do their thing. The darn anestesiologist continues to numb me as the dr performs the aversion....there is one nurse holding a heart monitor and another with the ultrasound....the aversion is successful!! I am so happy!!!! Now, tho I am sooo numb!!!! I cant move a muscle below my waist!!!! I take a long time to start contracting again, so they give me pitocin...then again...and again. Finally I begin to contract, but I have no control of my body down there. I am not pushing worth a darn. I ask the dr to help with the vacuum, she says no, not yet. She says baby is great, and so am I, so to be patient. I have been trying to push this baby out for about 45 minutes...I cant feel a thing. I have no sensation at all!!! After nearly an hour, the dr says that she will give me ONE push with the vacuum....that was all I needed. Baby Shae was born (FINALLY)!!!!
By the time Shae was born, Sadie had already been taken to the NICU because of her size...she was 4lbs 8oz. Shae was 5lbs 7oz. Shae came to our room for a few minutes, but she was grunting alot, so after about 30 minutes she was off to the NICU also. Her lungs were not as mature as her sisters. Both were given IV fluids and a gavage(sp??) tube for feedings. Shae was given a c-pap that she hated, so they changed it to a nasal c....something. This worked fine. It is just a flow of oxygen into her nose...nothing invasive. Then she was given an umbilical something....where they could draw blood and give meds thru her belly button. No nerves there, so it helped her not to get too many needle pricks.
They were born on 12-29-2009 and are still in the NICU doing well. They are in great hands. I have been able to nurse them both with success...once or twice. All of the tubes are gone except for the nasal food tube. They get every other feeding with that for now so they can conserve their energy and gain weight. Hopefully in the next week or so they will be at home.
What an amazing journey...thank you for sharing it with me!!!
