Birds have a built in GPS?

Those that know my journals know that my son is a science geek in a matter of speaking. He comes off with things that make me scratch my head at times. This last conversation we had had to make me chuckle a bit.

I don't know why we were talking about  the earth's magnetic field, oh wait, I do remember! It all started by 2012 and how the poles are supposed to switch. Anyway, back to my story.

He was informing me that the magnetic field is due to change and how airplanes could fall out of the sky when it happens and how cell phones would not work.Then he continued to tell me how GPS's would not work either.As I sat and listened to him and suddenly he said, "And birds could also just drop out of the sky because they are believed to have internal GPS." 

Then after a second, without missing a beat, he looked at me and said, "To bad you're not a bird, as much as you get lost you really could use a built in GPS system."
