DNA is an integral part of you, your body, and who you are.  This is the last post in a series on DNA, and it is full of random DNA information I hope I haven't used before.  The rest of the series can be found in the archives.

  • Over 99% of your DNA is identical to every other person.
  • The DNA from every cell in your body, lined up on end, wouldreach tot he moon and back thousands of times!
  • Most cells have DNA that would reach six feet in length but only a few trillionths of an inch wide.
  • Much of the DNA sequences we have is called "junk DNA", meaning it doesn't code for proteins.  It is ow known that "junk" DNA actually has a purpose in our genome!  This "junk DNA" actually makes up over 90% of our genome!
  • Many things can cause mutations to your DNA, including chemicals, UV light and viruses.
  • DNA Day is April 2010.  Fan their Facebook page to easily check out what they are up to or go to the government site:  DNA Day 2010.
  • Check out DNA quizes at Fun Trivia.
  • Check out many more DNA facts here.

I hope you enjoyed the DNA series.  I know some parts may be much more challenging to understand than others, but that is the nature of science.  I look forward to moving on to another series... something new.....
