Jon has been playing a bari sax for several years now. When we sold our house we purchased him his own bari (not a cheap instrument). He played in his middle school and did so awesome and was a part of their jazz band and won an award...and then we moved. This school has a regular band, but it also has 3 bari saxes! Which is amazing cuz the whole band is maybe like 50 kids. He plays with this band, but pretty much has not gone anywhere with it. It frustrated me that we spent a lot of money on an instrument that he plays once on the weekend (it is too big to bring home every day, it usually lives at school on the weekdays!).

So, a friend told us about this community band and jazz band and we went tonight. He LOVED it. It was wonderful and he is very excited to go back. Granted it is like 25 miles one way and it is a whole night (6-10..including driving), but he likes it~ that to me is worth it all. He said it was fun to play with people who WANT to play and are not just doing it to get done in a class. I was so happy..I am still happy. He is a very good sax player (alto and bari) and it is so nice to know he is going to enjoy it again. Music is meant to be enjoyed and if you can actually play music, well, that makes it even better!

Yup, I am a happy mom! :o)

And it goes double! His grades came yesterday and although he is not impressed, I am. Why am I impressed? Well he got two B's and 5 A's out of 7 classes. Whoo Hoo! Why is HE not impressed? Well, he does not like to end up on honor rolls or do things that make him stand out. So,  the only concession to his good grades that he wanted was ice cream last night! (which he gets fairly often, but we were not going to let him have any as it was pretty late and finally decided he could!~) He is convinced that grades are not a big deal (granted, in the bigger schools he attended he did a lot of struggling and having the classes easier in a smaller school is a big part of his good grades). He said his welding class no one finished or even started one of the big projects (he got an A) and a lot of the time was spent in like a study hall when he did finish something. One of his B's was in a class that he said the teacher is rather crazy. (I like her, but she is a very hard teacher) Many adults don't like this teacher because she seems to be too mean to their kids! LOL. As in a project was due. Jon stayed up late finishing it and handed it in. Another young lady I know handed in her ROUGH DRAFT late and was mad cuz the teacher tossed it out. They were  not even told to  hand in a rough draft, they  had several weeks to do this project and this gal did not start it til the day before it was due. I am sorry, but I sympathise with the teacher. And it was the end of the semester, so there was NO time to hand it in later anyway. Welll, Jon has managed to get stuff done all the time and on time. He rarely has homework because the teachers give them so much time in class for the work and he was even asked to read over some curriculum for NEXT year's books since he had so much extra time in history. One sub told me (I met her in a different school) that she remembered my son. She said he came in kinda bored looking and sat in the back. He is a furry huge kid (my soldier son calls him an Eastern Oregon Wookie) and wears plaid flannel and camo. She said she was kind of worried that he would be a trouble maker, but he turned out to be one of the nicest quietest kids in the class. She told me as a sub, those are the ones you appreciate. So, that made me  happy, too! (I would be skeptical that the sub was trying to be nice, but these are things I hear about him all the time!) All in all, it has been a good week for my young man. AND I think he might be growing again. He looks a tad thinner, so he may be getting taller. Cept, that is not necessarily a good thing. He is already almost 6 feet and I have no idea how much he weighs! He is going to be 16 pretty soon. My dear baby~~~ Happy Mom, Happy Day!

That's great! I'm glad you found a group that he likes and can enjoy playing with!
