My baby's head is small-

I took my baby to the dr. yesterday- her head is not growing, it is 15 in, at the 3%!  Her height was 50%, and her weight, at 12 lbs. 12 oz. was about 40%.  He said to bring her back in a month.  Anyone encountered anything like this?

mommy...
are they giving you any reasoning for it? what having small head measurements might mean?

No, and she looks great to me- she was intrauterine growth retardation, down to 3-5%,  but then I got gestational diabetes and could go to term- she was 7 lbs, 9 oz, regular size, but small for a diabetic baby- I guess I'm worried because she was several weeks too small when I was pregnant- any thoughts?  Tracy

At my baby's 4 month check-up, they said her head is small too. In the 25%, but not concerned. Dr said just as long as it continues to grow, it's if it stopped then there would be cause for concern.

I'd wait and see what the doctor says in a month... it could mean a lot of different things, some nothing to be really concerned about and some that may set some concerns for the future. I actually was taken away from my mom (32 years ago) because the didn't think I had a softspot. Infact, my softspot was VERY little and hardly there for the first few months. Once they found it, they watched it and well, it ended up being nothing... I'm just different! :) I do foster care for infants, and just recently I had a little girl that her head was not of normal size at her 2 week check-up. It actually is a very common thing that doctor's look at when measuring and weighing little ones.

cmy3kids seems to know what she is talking about and if it was something to be of concern I don't think your doctor would tell you to wait a whole month!  She looks healthy and cute as a bug in the pictures so I am sure she is fine!

Thanks so much for comments- I'll try not to worry, but that seems to be our nature as mothers-he did check her soft spots and they were fine.  My mom said, are you sure, I told her they measured her head like 6 times- she smiled all through it. And my 2 y.o. talks and talks to her dr, and my 5 y.o. spins in the chair- until she fell on the floor!   Tracy

Bella...

Hi Tracy.

At my Bella's 4 month check up she too was put into the 3% range on the growth chart for head size.  She was a preemie, 4 weeks early (5lbs 11ozs, 19 inches long, not sure of head size at birth right now).  Her doctor showed me the chart and said that she is growing on the curve, just smaller then normal.  Is your daughter growing on the curve from birth?  My doctor said that there shouldn't be anything to worry about, Bella is just a peanut!  :)  HTH

Her two month measurement was 16, obviously wrong, as her 4 month was 15!  And they took that about six times.  Thanks, we do have the little girls!  Tracy
