It's SO weird to think that exatly one week ago, right now, I was sitting next to my oldest son in the PICU of Children's Hospital, wondering if he was going to suffer a stroke or blood clot from his second massive brain surgery of the week. Wondering how much he would be able to move his right side. Wondering if the surgeries would be succesful...
I was Scared out of my mind that night!
And here we are one week later. My sons are BOTH asleep in their own room. Elijah is walking again, (with a limp). He is using his right hand some. He is talking more than before the surgeries!! And he hasn't had a seizure in SEVEN DAYS!!!
It had been over 2 years since his seizures came back, and he had them all day every day. He was spacey and drooly, and chewed on everything, and didn't talk very much or very well most of the time. He usually wore a vacant expression, and had a hard time tracking what was going on.
The last two days, since he's been home from the hospital and off the major narcotics, I'm getting to meet him again! Seizure-free Elijah! His eyes are focused! His sentences more complete. His words less slurred. He isn't chewing on anything, and he isn't drooling!! At all. And best of all he hasn't had ONE SEIZURE since waking up from brain surgery #4 on January 14th 2010!!
It's so much more than those things all combined. He's just HERE when he's not seizing! He's connected to the world around him in a subtle but very REAL way, that makes it so I'm not just waiting for a seizure, or thinking that he's having them when I'm not looking.
Next week we will have the stitches removed from his poor bald head, and a week after that he might be back in school, if all is still going this well! I can't believe it!
Having seizure-free Elijah back, made me realize how MUCH I've missed him these last two years! (we've had 2, nine month streches of seizure freedom since his diagnoses, and I'm always AMAZED by how different he is!) Of course, i love him no matter what, but I'm SO happy for him to be connecting and seeing the world again!
If we make it past that 9 month mark this time, I am throwing the BIGGEST party EVER!!!!! lol
But even if we don't, I have my son back right now. and every single day that he goes without a seizure is a celebration!! :)

Yay !!! I am so glad everything went well and you can see good changes already I'm sure it makes all the hard parts worth it
This brings tears of happiness to my eyes :) *Much congrats to you and Elijah!* I am so glad you made the decision you did to have the surgery. How scary to have to be in that place of uncertainty, but you did what was best for Elijah despite your fears. How Great is God and the power of prayer and those neurosurgeons! I can remember holding and rocking Jerry and thinking that "he just doesn't seem to be in there". I can so relate with you and I am just thrilled that you have your little boy back! You and he so deserve this. You are an amazing mama! Stay away seizures!!
