In two weeks I will be throwing a birthday party. But I hit a snag. I moved to a vegan life style that prohibits me from having anything that comes from an animal.
So no dairy, no meat, and since I have allergies to this no MSG.
It has been a huge challenge looking at all the cakes, donuts, and hamburgers. But I have to do this for my health. Since finding out about my allergies to these things I stopped cold turkey. Hence why I call them toxins. It isn't that I believe these things to be toxic it is just toxic to my body.
Planning my birthday party has been fun.... up until I had to decide what to eat. I don't plan on forcing my guests to eat what I eat when I know not everyone shares my view of being vegan. But I also could not put myself last at the same time. So how was I going to do all of this?
I wanted my cake and I wanted to eat it too! So off to search land I went. I decided to have a fine dinner for my guests and asked them to bring a side dish to share. For me I am making a vegan dinner and will offer that to my guests as well. I am also having vegan snacks as well.
But as for the cake I decided to do a three tier cake. The bottom two layers will be a regular old red velvet cake and the top will be a vegan red velvet cake. The cream cheese frosting will be all vegan so I don't have the chance of getting regular frosting into my frosting. I thought about making the whole cake vegan but I have to mess with the recipes to see if it is comparable or even better. That way I don't have to worry about someone not liking it.
This happens to be one of the many challenges I have had since the decision to join this life style. The other one has been people chastising me for not forcing my son to make the same decision or my husband. I can't force two people to be something I am. I hardly know what I am doing let alone trying to force two other people to take that journey with me.
The only reason I am taking vitamins is because I have been fumbling and depriving myself of nutrition. I need to learn how to balance out my food, when to eat my food, and what kinds of foods I need to eat to keep myself healthy. So that if my son decides to do the same thing at least I can help him some what. Another thing is I don't know many vegan recipes so I tend to be eating the same thing all the time. And I have been eating a lot of beans and broccoli.
One day I will get this right.
Comments:
My mother is making a rib roast and the guests are bringing a side dish. But for me I am looking at some nice dinners for my birthday and even some vegan cookbooks. I just don't know which one to get. I didn't realize how many cook books they have out there.
You can try "How it all Vegan" by Tanya Barnard and Sarah Krammer. Another good one is "Sinfully Vegan" U do not know the author's name. As well as "You won't believe it's vegan" and one of my all time faves "Vegan lunchbox". If you want one for sweets the vegan bakery in NYC called Babycakes just published a book called "Babycakes NYC". Hope this helps.
My cousin is vegan, and for her birthday she had a chocolate vegan cake, and since I have an autoimmune disease(ulcerative colitis) eating regular cake is death for me.. So I had her vegan cake and somehow it tasted way better then REGULAR cake!!!!! For me becoming a vegan would probably be a good thing but I just cant give up hamburgers and filet mingion
Now I really want to try making my own vegan cakes this weekend! I am going to be a fat vegan ROFL.

I am not vegan now, but I was for a long time. I just LOVE cheese!! There are a lot of vegan cookbooks that have great cake recipes. You can even find them online. There are so many options, like vegan cream cheese. I say make it your way, it is your Bday. Or make it a potluck, everyone bring an item. My son and I do not eat meat, but my hubby and daughter do. It makes meal time interesting to say the least. Good luck, and eat vegan cake!
