When I was in elementary school I was diagnosed with ADHD. At that time there was little known about it so the treatment was basically just trial and error of medication. While I did ok with it, there is so much more to the diagnosis than anyone would ever imagine.
Last week I took my four year old son to the doctor. Because I know a lot of the signs of ADD/ADHD I noticed he was definitely exhibiting some of those. Since this is a genetic disorder and can be passed from parent to child, it is a very real possibility he has it. The doctor basically confirmed my suspicion and has now referred us to someone trained in treating this disorder to make a confirmed diagnosis.
While talking about ADD/ADHD, our doctor recommended I pick up the book Driven to Distraction by Dr. Edward Hallowell. It is a book that explains ADD/ADHD and the different affects it has on people. Until I began reading this book I did not completely understand how ADHD was still affecting my everyday life. I now have my eyes wide open to why I am the way I am - and I am thankful for that! I hope this book will not only help me understand myself better, but that it will also give me the knowledge I need to help my son cope with whatever this diagnosis brings his way!
I just wanted to share this information with anyone who is interested. So, if you are still reading, thank you! Also, if you know anyone who is affected by ADD or ADHD, either personally or because they have a child/family member with it, I highly recommend this book. And, if they are not able to sit and read - a lot of people with ADD/ADHD cannot - this book is also available in audio format.
