Two of my favorite things - fireflies and stars, in one time-lapse photo. Someone took this photo and submitted to the photo contest for National Geographic's Picture of the Day. They state is was a one hour time-lapse photo taken in Ontario, Canada. You can view it bigger and better by going to their website (today) and selecting the image as your desktop wallpaper. It instantly reminded me of the nights spent out with my (now) husband, watching the fireflies in the backyard. Sometimes we would walk and talk and look at the stars.

I never stopped to consider what they look like in the light. All I ever see are their glowing butts in the darkness. Here are a few firefly pictures from Wikipedia (public domain images) - they look like little beetles.

It may be way too cold for fireflies, but if you are interested in a little bit more information, check out the following:

That's a wonderful picture. I love fireflies...pretty much the only bug I DO like. LOL My yard is filled with them in the warmer months and I love going out with the kids and chasing the fireflies trying to catch them in our hands. Life doesn't get much better than that. :)
We call them lightining bugs here, lol...we have TONS of them, the kids love to run around all summer catching them...but fair warning...DO NOT squish them...they STINK...and if you let your kids put them in a bug house (jar, whatever), they WILL make your house stink, lol...
Ezranight - you bring up a great point. When I was reading and researching for this post, an article I read said the chemical that glows also tastes and smells bad. This is part of their defense mechanism - if a predator eats a firefly, the taste is bad, and they won't likely eat another one!
Love those little critters. Boy, though they look a lot like four-lined plant bugs and a host of others I don't care to see in my garden! Thanks for the pics!
We do not have them anymore. They sprayed for mosquitos years ago because of the West Nile Virus and now they are gone. :( Yes I would love to be able to glow.
I walked alot when I was pregnant. With my first son I was about 2 miles down a trail when I went into labor. I remember walking back as fast as I could and seeing his father running in the grass next to me trying to catch them..He had long hair and I could see his hair flying behind him, his green converse and the little lights blinking..lol
