We have an ongoing LITTER FREE LUNCH CHALLENGE
at my children's elementary school.

Children (& especially their parents) are encouraged to pack a litter free lunch for school.  This means using thermos' instead of drink boxes, lunch boxes instead of paper bags, & containers instead of plastic baggies.

We've been weighing their trash each month to determine which class is reducing their lunch litter.
The kids are always excited to see it's a weigh in day!
They never know the exact day, just so we can get an accurate number.

I'm happy to report, that we've noticed quite a difference.  Our number has been going down, HOWEVER we've noticed that each child has at least ONE container in their lunch now.  Before there were plastic bags  everywhere!
Awareness has been our greatest goal, and it looks like we are achieving that.

We also started a Litter Free Prize Patrol to give the kids a little insentive to be litter free.  It's amazing how even a little sticker excites them!

Overall, it's been a great experience.
Now we are preparing for Earth Week, and hoping to make it a fun, interactive time for the students.

This has been a great lesson for them to teach them that
even a child can make a difference, no matter how small.
Especially when they all work together.

I try to do this... sometimes we end up with baggies, but not often.

Here is an idea... use bead containers to make lunchables.  It is EASY and only one container.  I pop them into the dishwasher and clean them that way.

I bought some fun containers at Target for $1.  The kids actually ask to use them.

We are a homeschool family so for us this is not really an issue. When we do pack lunches for park days and field trips, we always have reusable bags, boxes, cups, lunch bags, and coolers. No juiceboxes or ziploc baggies here.. LOL. Great post, thank you for sharing!

Yep, I sure do, the sandwiches are in a reuseable container & I even pack a cloth napkin rather than paper.  The fruit is left out and he has a vinyl lunch box with a thermos.

My daughter has a laptop bento lunchbox that she takes to school. They have individual compartments for each item. She loves it and we get a lot of compliments. Instead of a juice box I send a straw sippy cup w/ juice and water. She even takes real metal utensils instead of plastic.

Always use reuseable containers. There is no other option. Ziplock is too expensive to throw away anyway!

This is mandatory at my kids' schools all the time.  The only think that irks me is how often my tupperware does not end up coming back home... the fact that I am losing dozens of 'throw away' tupperware every school year (which I presume end up misplaced and then thrown in the trash) seems to somewhat defeat the purpose.
