Recently it has come to my attention that I have been considered "white trash" by a family member. White trash may sound like a bad thing to some but to me it makes no difference. I know who and what I am and if it looks like white trash, so be it. I admit there are some things about being white trash that are indeed a  part of me.

1. White trash  often refers to someone who is of a lower tax bracket, in other words, it  means that I am poor. This happens to be true, I am poor, but happy.

2. White trash often refers to someone who is a poor house keeper. Again, guilty. I am a poor house keeper, I have tried everything to become better at the domestic art of keeping house and yet, I just can't seem to get it. I am not living in filth, mind you, just clutter.

3. White trash often refers to someone who lives in an falling down house. Ok, so my house is old, over 100 years old to be exact, this may be true, but my house has large rooms and lots of space for my family.

4. White trash often refers to someone with a bit of a potty mouth. I do have quite the potty mouth, I often emerge from my bedroom obscenities flying from my mouth, but I don't try to hide my potty mouth, I cuss in front of everyone. Don't really care if they like it.

5. White trash often refers to people who live in certain neighborhoods. I do live in a very trashy neighborhood and yes, most of my neighbors are some degree of trashy, but you have never met a better bunch of people in your life.

To those people who think white trash is all bed, let enlighten you about a few things.

Yes, we are poor, but we have all learned to do without. We all know what is necessary and what is creature comfort. When it comes down to the cable bill and the utilities we know what the right choice is. What's more, we all know how to share what we do have with others. One family I know recently lost every thing in a house fire. I instantly went out to my neighbors, this white trash, and let them know the situation. The next thing I know my living room is full of donations.

Sure, we collect clutter, we often have junk in our yards and all over our homes, but we have a good time with the junk we have!

Our houses are old, old and worn, but we own them. We own them and love them. Also there is never a warmer place than the home of a white trash person. You have never been welcomed so nicely until you have had the welcome of the white trash. Anyone, anytime. Come on in, have a seat, do  you need a drink? SOmething to eat?

Also, there is nothing like a group of white trash getting drunk and throwing some spades! Talking s***, and having fun!

As for the neighborhood, well, you will never see anything like the 4th of July in my white trash  neighborhood. You will never eat better food, or see another display of fireworks like the one's here. It is absolutely the best in the world. THis is of course my opinion, but the group that ends up here grows in numbers every year.

What is even better is you will never meet a group of people who stick together better than the people in this neighborhood. Sure, we have our disagreements, but we end up forgiving each other in the end, and when the s*** goes down, you can be certain that we have each other's backs.

So, you can say all you want about white trash. You can brag about all your money and status. You can tell me how wonderful your life of non-white trash is. I am finally coming out of the closet. I am white trash. I am poor, a bad house keeper, live in a old house, have  potty mouth, and live in a neighborhood surrounded by white trash; but, I am also happy and having a great time!

So, when the end comes, and we are all reduced to barbarianism again, who will make it? Who will be the people who make it? Will it be the people who lived in their nice homes with their money and their stuff or will it be the people who know how to do without, the people who have stuck by each other and worked together? WIll it be the white trash?

You may think you are white trash but let me tell you, I've met people with $$ & live in a fine house.  They have no class & to me, they are white trash by their actions & rude comments.  Money & material possessions do not define white trash to me.  It's ones actions that will or will not earn the respect of other & put them in whatever classification they deserve.  As long as you are happy & not hurting anyone else, what others say shouldn't matter. You WORK hard to earn what you have & should be proud of that.

I agree with TSJMOM91804 - I see the WT label relating more about someone's behavior than necessiarly their tax bracket.  Sounds like you've got a great view of life and awesome neighbors. I wouldn't trade them for anything!
