I'm ambivalent, really. I love flowers & candy just as much as the next girl, but I'm not going to give my man a guilt trip if he doesn't shower me with them simply because the calendar tells him to. Our lives are too busy to adhere to some holiday with obscure origins and questionable motives. We're better off scheduling a date night for ourselves on a day that's not famous for crowded restaurants and over-priced love-themed merchandise. I detested the holiday during the years I spent single and yearning for romance-it seemed so exclusionary to me. Even though I'm now in a committed, loving relationship I still cringe when those corny jewelry ads come on at this time of year. They reek of sappy marketing. All that being said, however, I'd like to emphasize once again that if my man chooses to partake in the Valentine's Day tradition of giving me gifts to show his affection I will happily accept!
