I love what I do. I am a stay at home mom and a full time college student. I love to be at home and raise our four children. We have 3 boys and one little girl. Griffin is eight. Macgregor (or Mac as he is known around here) is five, Ranger is three. Cheyenne is one. It is a crazy life but I love it.
We home school, so I never get a break from the kids that other parents get. I don't understand how they can stand to send their kids away for eight hours a day. Yes, I get frustrated and some days feel like pulling my hair out, but I love that I teach my kids, that I raise my children. I have seen the village and I don't want it to raise my kids. Griffin was in public school for 2 years. He hated it. Who wants to sit for hours on end learning? We learn all around us. We learn while cleaning, while driving down the road, while walking in the museum, while playing on the swing set. The whole world is our classroom. We can get up in the morning and decide to go for a walk, or watch TV before we settle down at the desk to do some work. My fridge is our white board. My kitchen is our classroom. I have paintings on the walls in my living room, I have science experiments in the bathroom, we don't miss school because of snow days. We are outside in the snow learning about the fact that no snowflake is the same. We learn about temperatures and how many inches it rained or snowed. We have physical education in the pool. We learn music by singing in the car or jamming to the radio in the living room. We learn math by cooking and doing worksheets. We learn social studies by studying history or watching the news. We learn social skills by playing with each other or by playing with the neighborhood children. We learn also by going to the store and talking to an adult, or going to church, or by being involved in boy scouts. They learn how to clean, but also respect for each other and for adults. Most adults always praise me on my children's behavior, they are polite, they know and properly say Yes ma'am, no sir. Please and Thank you automatically come out of their mouths, they hold doors open for everyone. They help each other and everyone in need that they see.
I love what I do an wish that everyone else could see the good that is involved in the “unknown” world of home schooling. God is at the center of most home schools. Next time you think about putting us down, think about what your child is sitting through while at those supposedly wonderful boxes. They learn about bullies, they learn about sex way to early, they learn to hate, and to tease, to tear each other down and to have to follow other people's rules, because they are more important and bigger than they are. They learn that life is not fun and that learning is something that has to be done. My kids learn what they want and what is of interest to them. My day is never easy, I never get a break, and I may complain that the kids didn't listen or didn't do what I asked them to do. But at least at the end of the day, I know that my kids learned something and will never forget it. Just ask Griffin about a grasshopper, or the ten times facts, or about galaxies and you will realize that my children are constantly in that learning mode.
