I am the parent of 5 and have learned through trial and tribulation on the process of Gifted and Talented Children. Here in my school district, San Bernardino City Unified School District, they offer Ravens testing for all 2nd, 5th, and 8th graders with  parents permission. The tests are taken in the classroom and administered by our Advanced Learners Department.  The test is more about puzzle like test, and does not have any english or math materials. This test is especially helpful for those  students whose English is their second language and for students who do not fit that gifted profile due to underachievement.  The questions become harder as the further they go. Once the test is completed they will check their percentile (do not confuse this for percentages). The students whose percentile is 98 and 99 are automatically identified and are notified first. Those students whose percentile score is 90-97, are then reviewed. The will look at their State Test scores and both Language Arts and Math has to be in Advanced to be identified. That letter will be sent home later.

What happens then?

You are given the option to send your child to 3 different Gate schools. They are regular schools that offer a whole track to Gate students. All teachers are certified and classes are more rigirous, and challenging, which is needed for these special students. Your children may need to be bussed or you can drive them to these school. They will blossom and reach their full potential.

Sometimes as parents we become afraid on how our children will miss their friends or how they might not be the top student, but they are learning to their full potiential. They will make new friends and be accepted for being smart. Not only that, they will also be competitve in a good way.

Remember to attend the school and speak with the teachers before making any decisions. There might be options, you just need to pick the best one for your child.

Hope this information will be useful. I am a parent and an advocte of gifted children, and am constantly learning.

This is very helpful!

Thanks for posting this.

Do you know if there are any "sample" test, I am curious what they need to know to be considered gifted?

They do not give you a sample test or question. The vanguard test, really only tests one aspect of the whole range of gifted abilities. And shows more of their mathematical and spacial abilities. There are other tests but are not offered by our school district.

You can also look up the Test as the Ravens Test
