For years I didn't understand thank you notes. They seemed to be more of a chore than anything. If the person is there to see you open the gift then they know you are thankful.
Most of my girl friends and I have had an agreement that we would tell each other thank you and be done. This was mostly because when you have small children, sitting down and writing a card can be a daunting task.
Recently, a friend went into the hospital. Jenn and I went to visit her because we knew she needed a break in her day. We were surprised that we had a great time visiting even in the hospital.
Today I went to my mail box and found a Thank you card. It made me smile. She took the time to not only write out thank you but made a card too.

Thank you cards no longer seem to be de rigeur and that is a shame. These days when all one gets is bills or insurance or hospital bills in the mail, it's a nice lift to see a handwritten card of any kind.
I am a thank you writer. I am sure there are times I have overlooked a few in my life, but I try to always acknowledge a kindess with a good old fashioned handwritten card. There is nothing like it.
I am raising my son the same way, he always writes out thank yous for birthdays and Christmas. Sometimes there is a bit of groaning when his hands are tired, but I always remind him of how important it is to send a note to let someone know you are grateful.
That is so sweet...I think it's sad that thank you cards/notes have gone down in rank on the etiquette list...I know i don't ALWAYS send them, but I try...and I'm teaching my kids to as well *nod*
Beautiful card (and thanks)! :-) It means a lot to know someone appreciates a gift or YOU!
That is so sweet!
I love thank you cards. I write them all the time, and make Abby do it too :)
I always send thank you cards to far away family and friends. Its something I taught my kids to do as well. I know the older generation loves it and the younger ones are more understanding if we "forget". I do like sending them though.
I am not a regular thank you card writer myself, but I have instilled my children to draw a picture and write a note of thank you on it. Sometimes its the little notes that make us remember our manners again.
I'm a FIRM BELIEVER in sending HANDWRITTEN THANK YOU NOTES!!!!
Even when my friends say that I don't have to do it, I don't feel right...and always breakdown and send them one anyway.......I ESPECIALLY DO THIS WITH A YOUNG CHILD!!! WHAT A GREAT EXAMPLE YOU ARE SETTING!!!! When my son was a baby I did them while he slept or napped...now I tell him what I'm doing and sometimes he even colors a lil picture on the inside of the card.
