Well, I had my little baby boy yesterday. I suppose I can start from the beginning.
I woke up at 5 in the morning with wet thighs. I'm pretty sure I lost my plug and had leaked some amnio fluid. I wasn't contracting but I did call my doctor at 5:30. She told me to see her at the office at 8 that morning to see just what was going on (unless my contractions start and then to call her before hand). I did see her. The fluid test was negative (she thinks that maybe I had a 'high tear' so I wasn't really leaking anymore) but I was dilated 3-4cm and effaced 50% (just Wednesday I was only dilated 1cm and not at all thinned out). I was contracting but only every 12-14 mins. The doctor had a hunch that labor would really kick in by noon. She wanted me to head to the hospital if the contractions got to be 6-7 mins apart.
Well, I went home a bit pessimistic. I was afraid that labor would totally stall. Well, the contractions stayed fairly fair apart until about 9:30. They went from non-painful to uncomfortable and started getting closer together. I was starting to get hopeful! I think it was around 10:30 that I was like “we got to go!”. They were about 5-6 mins apart. The contractions didn’t slowly get closer together. They went from 8-9 to 5-6 mins apart.
We called the doctor (again) on the way to the hospital. I hobbled in at 11:10 (I was contracting very hard) and we made our way up to the maternity floor. I changed into my robe and the nurse checked me. I was 4-5cm. The contractions were coming hard and fast. I decided an epi was in my future. They hooked me up to an IV. The contractions were rough. I started asking for Nubane (which I didn’t think I would ask for but the pain was so bad). The nurse checked me to see if there was even time for Nubane. I was 7cm and baby was at zero station. As soon as she was done checking I felt like I had to PUSH. I told the nurse what I wanted to do and she simply said “you do what your body tells you to do”. I wanted to kiss her! I got on my hands and knees rocked just a bit and PUSHED! I was kinda screaming while I pushed. Lincoln Michael was born with one big push. Everything happened so quickly. The nurses weren’t ready for baby yet. The doctor managed to grab the head and did basically catch him.
I was in shock really. I sat there on my hands and knees, with the cord hanging out of me just thankful that the pain had stopped. The nurses were working on getting Lincoln cleaned up and getting his APGAR scores. I finally realized that I wanted to sit. The nurses cleaned up the mess on the bed and I sat down. I hadn’t passed the placenta yet and the doctor did have to eventually scoop it out (yeah, that was real fun). I got to hold my baby and he nursed right away and basically just suckled for a good hour.
Lincoln Michael was born at 11:53am. He was 6lbs 8oz and 18in. He’s little like his sister was (6lbs 6oz and 18in). I didn’t tear at all and my bleeding was “normal” (with Ireland I bled quite a bit). I was in the hospital a whole 40 minutes. Absolute madness. I still can’t believe I had a “natural” childbirth, but it wasn’t by choice. =) It’s a neat story though. Everyone is doing fine.
Thanks for hanging in ‘til the end. This got kind of long. =))
