I say cop out. lazy. don't give a ----.When I learned about DS awareness day I was very exited. This was around 3 yrs ago. CM was fairly new and I had seen them raise money for another cause. I think it was like they would donate a dollar to X cause for every person we invited and joined CM. I am sure that must have flooded their in box for other causes for them to help. I didn't ask for them to raise money- I simply asked for recognition. you know how they change the CM logo at the top to reflect whatever holiday, cause, etc.Of course I got shot down. Later when they came up with the "causes" sweetpeas, I asked if they could make one with our colors (yellow & blue) really how hard could it be??? shot down again. In our group I have seen many post in the last few yrs about recognition for our children and we get the same run around everytime. So I suppose it is up to us. I am going to change my background, avatar and see how much awareness I can do btw now and Sunday- I am off to prek to read right now- but hopefully I can get a journal written for our children that isn't a ranting about CM, a site I have grown to love and spend most of my online time the last few yrs-but one that really disappoints and breaks my heart at this moment. Below is the message they sent in response to a friend.
Thank you very much for your suggestion.
We think that Down Syndrome awareness is a very important cause that is near to the hearts of many members of CafeMom.
From time to time, we will pick different causes that we will try to support and we do try to support causes in different ways at different times. As you know, right now we are supporting a breast cancer cause. In the future, we will try other things and show our support for things in different ways.
We also view CafeMom as a platform for all of our members to support things in the way they want to. We try to stay neutral and let the members decide what they want to do. To this end, there are already a lot of ways that you can show your support for your cause using the tools that CafeMom has:
1) Change your profile page background to show your support.
2) Change your avatar.
3) Add a Rich-text widget to your page showing the your causes' ribbon and write about why you care about this cause.
4) Add an RSS widget to your page that pipes in news on your cause from other sites.
5) Add Journal posts about your cause awareness.
6) Use the awareness SweetPeas (we created a purple ribbon SweetPea, which is the color for Domestic Violence awareness).
There's also a 'My Cause' widget available on the site which allows moms to display their support for a special cause. You can create your own virtual button from an image you've uploaded to CafeMom and include links related to your cause. You can find the My Cause widget in the CafeMom category on the CafeMom Widgets page.
We do appreciate all suggestions and want to support all issues. We also want to give other members a fair chance to promote and stand behind the causes that they care about the most.

Please if you have time or want to help our cause please change your BG and/or avatar-please help bring awareness to our children and let others know their life is worth living!

Comments:
Thanks so much, Tina. I really wish they would sit up and take notice. Just like you, I LOVE CafeMom and have been a devoted member for over 2 1/2 years now. We aren't asking for much and I don't understand the brushoff. But, absolutely, let's do it, journal, change our avatars, backgrounds, add signatures to our posts. If they won't do it, we'll do it ourselves!
I'm particularly offended by the part of the response stating the want to remain neutral. Are there people that will be upset if Down syndrome is supported?
I think remaining neutral is a cop out. That is how hate and ignorance spread, people remain "neutral" and do nothing.
I don't quite understand why they wrote this "Use the awareness SweetPeas (we created a purple ribbon SweetPea, which is the color for Domestic Violence awareness)." in the response to a Down Syndrome awareness request? What does Domestic Violence have to do with Down Syndrome? Anyway... I have a Background that I created (it's a picture my 4 year old daughter and I made together last year), it's called T21... if anyone wants to steal it from my page and use it, you are more than welcome to!!
I voted this post popular. I'd have to say I'm tempted to think somebody on the CM side is being lazy too. Referring to their email response above: " From time to time, we will pick different causes that we will try to support and we do try to support causes in different ways at different times. As you know, right now we are supporting a breast cancer cause. In the future, we will try other things and show our support for things in different ways." .... Certainly, I am in agreement that breast cancer is a worthy cause also ... BUT I would point out to the developers at CafeMOM that breast cancer isn't a parenting cause in the same way DOWNS is ... I think they are missing out on an opportunity to serve their readership - for at least one day - on a issue that is a LIFELONG issue for the parents and children who are faced with DOWNS ... again, IMO, Breast Cancer = Yes, an important issue, but is it a LIFELONG issue beginning at birth? No, it isn't. I hope CM will reconsider their stance on this.
I'm going to link to this in the Group Owner's Club. They recognize different causes on their special days, too. Hope it helps!!!
Sharing this with ALL of my friends. I'm surprised that it isn't in the top journals.. with as many reads as it has gotten.. Does that seem weird to anyone else as well?
