My daughter was diagnosed with Mild Autism ( by a child psychologist) 2 1/2 years ago.  She spent kindergarten in special education except for the opening announcements and "the Pledge" and a couple songs which she was in the regular kindergarten class for.  In 1st grade she was put into the regular 1st grade class for things like music, art, pe and a couple academic classes that she already excelled in like math and spelling.  By the middle of 1st grade she was in the regular class for all but 2 hours of the day.  Those 2 hours were spent working on her IEP goals in conversation mostly.  Now at the last quarter of 1st grade in the IEP meeting this week it was decided that she should be in regular 2nd grade next year full time except for an hour or so to work on her goals which will be in a "resource room" with typical kids who just need a little help.  Some have ADHD or are just slow learners in certain subjets but otherwise typical kids.  We are finished with special education unless something unforseen happens.  The special education teachers in our school district are awesome!!!
