This all came about a year and a half ago (when President Bush was still in office). My husband, my daughter, and I were at our favorite restaurant (at the time). He looked at me and said "I have something to ask you, just hypnotically." "I am thinking of going back into the Army." I was very excited at that time, "I couldn't be more proud of you!" Then within two minutes he said "no" it wouldn't be a good idea because we have the house, I still had a few years left in college, and he had a well paying job. I tried for a week or so to talk him into going back into the Army, but with no luck.
History: He went into the Army and a few days before he was out of basic training he got hurt really bad from jumping out of a helicopter. You know there is a wrong way to land and he did it. This was years before we met.
Well after the election a co-worker of mine was talking about his wife going into the Army as an officer. After talking with him and finding out what he knew, I went online.
History: My father was in the Air Force for years. I come from a strong military family. When I was in high school I was going to enlist into the AF but my senior year I had to move to my mom's place. That's where I met the man I am married to now.
I looked into all the information I could about being an officer in the AF and it seems perfect for me! I am currently finishing two bachelor degrees in accounting and business administration. The hardest thing for an accountant is everyone wants experience. How can you get this if no one will hire you, right? They have three career fields I am interested in. I talked with one of my friends because she was in the AF not too long ago and she was on my side and very excited for me. I talked with my BFF because she is married to an AF man and I talked with her husband too (we all went to high school together and he is my friend as well). So after getting some advice and getting "pepped up" I went to talk to my husband. He was okay with the idea at first. But within a few days he lost his job (was laid off). He started spending a lot of time online and reading those horror stories of what our current president is planning on doing (true or not I don't care at this point). He said he would devoice me first if I every joined the AF. This hurt really bad!
After a few more months I was blessed with a new job. This job paid wonderfully and was an actual accounting job with human resources as well (working both majors). I was very happy there until the place was sold. The new owners came in and cleaned house. Said I didn't have the experience they needed so they laid me off (I had only been there 9 months). The funny thing was just two weeks before I knew my job was over I was talking about the AF again (with my friends only). When I came home and told my husband, his friend called him to chat and he told his friend "the military is looking damn good right now." After crying for a few hours I got up and I and my husband talked about the AF again.
Here the problem I am facing... in order to apply as an officer in the AF you have to be less than 170 lbs (at all times) and no older than 27 (age to apply). I currently weigh 190 lbs (been dieting & exercising for months but have only lost 25 lbs, I think my birth control might have something to do with it, its and IUD and I've heard they make you going weight) and am turning 26 in a few months. The application process takes a year, so if I don't apply soon I will miss my chance! To apply I have to have a physical (which will state my current weight), my scores from the AFOQT, my college transcripts, and the application. Right now I am worried I won't lose the weight in time! I have an appointment to have the birth control removed but it's not until April 12th! I feel like every day that passes is another day I miss out on.
I have checked the OT school and the program is wonderful! This will give me the training I need and the experience I need! The pay is higher than what I was making, plus with a housing allowance on tip makes it all worth wild. They have tuition assistance with will help since I am in deep debt with my student loans, medical, retirement plan, and basically you earn a month's paid vacation every year (2.5 days a month starting your first month). Plus the biggest advantage is it's a job and it's least likely I would get laid off again than in civilian jobs.
