I have to get on my soap box and make an in general complaint to the parents of this nation.

WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU FEEDING YOUR KIDS?

We have become so desensitized to processed foods that we are feeding our kids garbage all of the time.  For example a friend of mine has asked me to help her make her kids diets better.  She came over to visit and chat with me with her 2 year old son.  While we were talking he got hungry so she pulled out some Gerber Gummy Snacks for him to eat.  When I asked her why she would give him that she said "the box says they are real fruit".  I replied,"I have never seen fruit shaped like that come off of any tree, vine or plant."  Really the box is claiming there is real fruit in them most likely in the form of fruit juice.  Eating those strawberry gummies is not the same as eating a strawberry.  I asked her what his fruit and veggie intake was for the day before and she told me he had jelly on his toast.  Again ....... no, it is made with fruit but it is not as good as real fruit.  She told me he would not eat real fruit so I took some fresh strawberries out of my fridge and cut them up for him.  Of course he didnt want to eat them at first, he knows mom has gummies and previous tantrums have proven she will give them to him to make him stop.  I tossed the gummies in the garbage and he had a fit for 30 minutes (screaming, pounding on my kitchen door trying to get to them, ect).  Then he ate every strawberry I cut plus another bowl.

As I said all I am trying to make people aware of is the "food" we are eating is not really food.  Its a science experiment with very little actual plant, dairy or meat ingredients in it.

I also get frustrated when I hear people say "I take a vitamin".  All those processed foods are loaded with fake vitamins.  They are not using real food so naturally they would have to fortify it with vitamins or you would have to fortify yourself with vitamins.  Real food has real vitamins in it that studies have shown your body absorbs better then those artificial vitamins.

OK, I'll stop before I really get going.  Its just a topic I feel very passionate about after dropping 100 lbs and waking up to what I was really feeding my kids.  I mean their generation is expected to live a shorter life then I do.  I cant help but wonder why,  as a society our medicine will advance but our processed lifestyle keeps getting worse and worse.  I dont want my kids to be diabetics (according to the latest studies, because of eating habits kids born after 2000 have a 1 in 3 chance of being diabetic), I dont want them to struggle losing weight like I did and I dont want their lives shortened because of what I put on the table.

Please dont tell me you dont have the time.  Are you really telling me an extra 30 minutes in the kitchen is not worth your child, SO and your own future well being?  I am a homeschooling mom to a 9 year old daughter and an 8 year old autistic son.  I babysit in my home, I study martial arts and compete on a national level, I volunteer for a local community center, an animal rescue and my home is an emergency overnight shelter for battered women and children while their long term housing  is being set up.  If I have time, so do you.

I also want to warn any one who is going to join me and go processed food free, for the first two days to a week you are going to feel grumpy, clumsy, have headaches and some times nausea.  Why?  Your body is detoxing.  Think about the, what you have put in your body is making you have to detox like a drug addict.

I'm sorry if this sounded preachy but having done all this research I am really scared for all childrens futures.

I am going to do my best to keep this journal going and post non processed food recipes to try. My family as of tomorrow will be completely processed food free for a week and the changes have been amazing already.

i am interested in this as well. i jsut dont know how to go about it. i'm not proud to say that i feed my DD processed food, and that my DH and I also eat it on a regular basis. its fast, cheap, and easy. but being a SAHM and doing college classes online, I HAVE the time to change that. I just dont know how.

no the whole family has been process free for a week.  I tried it first to see what it would entail. Why?  I wont put my kids through anything i am unwilling to do myself.   I have been process free for a few months now.  And we will remain process free so I will see you in 6 months :)

Going processed free is easier then you would think.  Its common sense, start from scratch cooking.

Starting out and on busy days the crockpot is your best friend :)  From scratch buscuits are so simple to make I cant believe I ever bought the tube stuff.  And while planning out my groceries I am finding it to be cheaper in the long run.

As I said I am going to attempt to put up recipes for those who would like them.  Most likely I will post some tonight after the kids settle into bed.

Any questions any one has about this I am more then happy to answer.  I have been researching this for months now and it was eye opening.

Bravo!

Eating whole foods is so much better, not to mention they taste better.  My taste buds have been awakened and I can barely stand to eat/drink the chemicals that I can now taste in the over-processed food.
