I received a phone call back in March from Military Spouse Magazine. The editor asked me first if I were a military spouse, and I said yes. She then asked if I were the owner of Honey Bee Photography. "Yes I am!"
She exhaled and said "Great! One of the candidates for our contest "Military Spouse of the Year" is on Elmendorf and needs to have pictures taken of her and her family. We need to do a spread so we'll need at least six very different images of her and her family, along with a cover shot".
My mouth dropped open, and my response was, ike a big dork, "Will my work be on the cover of your magazine???"
She recovered and said, "Well, we need the cover shot in *case* she wins the spouse of the year. Would you be willing to do this? We've selected you because you are an Air Force wife and we really love your style of photography."
Well. How could one say no to that?
A couple days later I got to talk to the lovely Lori Bell and asked her questions about her and her family and we came up with many different shoot ideas.
I photographed her singing with her choir at church.
I photographed her cover shot in the studio.
I photographed her and her family atop a snow-machine against the beautiful mountains..
I photographed her and her family in downtown Anchorage.
I photographed her and her friends from NAMMAS (National Association of Military Moms and Spouses) at the Sugarspoon on Spenard.
Finally I photographed her and her adorable family in her home being themselves.
PHEW.
SHE WON! Lori WON Military Spouse of the Year. And the magazine issue is now out in BX's, PX's and Commissaries, not to mention at Barnes and Noble's. Please pick up the magazine and check it out for yourself.
YES. That's LORI on the front cover. MY work. I'm still astonished that my work made the cover of this great magazine. And my name in the credits!

CONGRATULATIONS to you! NICE PICTURES!!! She is a beautiful woman. Such a WARM smile! Maybe you'll be famous someday for your photography skills. If not then as Andy Warhol said "You've got your 15 minutes of fame!" He implied everyone gets 15 minutes of notoriety in their lifetime.
