I am an Army brat...who was recently reminded of the cost of war. I am very fortunate to have not actually been close to anyone who has been killed in action. Unfortunately, this has made me a bit complacent when it comes to truly realizing what Memorial Day is all about. Since I grew up around the military, I shouldn't just associate Memorial Day with cookouts and visiting friends and relatives. Our country is at war.....even if my current life is not affected much by that. I was jolted from my peaceful little life with news a few months ago that a distant relative of my husband was killed in action. We did not know him, but it was obvious from all of the memorials we read about him that he was a great husband and father who was loved very much. He's one of the thousands of brave men and women our country has lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. In honor of their memory, I posted a list of websites on my blog that give the history of Memorial Day and show video/picture tributes to fallen soldiers. These sites show the human side and the truly devastating loss represented by the war statistics of dead and wounded we see on the news. They really bring home the fact that it is up to us to remember the fallen, so that their lives were not taken in vain.
