Recently a neighbor of mine experienced one of the worst experiences a family can have. Their home caught on fire and is now unliveable.
This is exceptionally bad because the owners of the house are in their 60's and 70's and are too old and in too ill of health to start over. What makes it worse is that they are still raising the last of their 8 children.
Though the fire has been ruled electric, there were many questions as to the validity of that ruling.
So, now this family, who if they had nothing else, had the security of a home that as long as they paid their property taxes no one could take from them, has only what items they could salvage from their house. Basically, this family has sunk pretty low.
So when this family is down, one would think people would have compassion and help them. This unfortunately was not true.
After the fire, their next blow came when they went to deal with the cable company. They went to make good on the items they had. The cable company fined them $800. Was the fire their fault? No. Did they do something to the cable box? No. But, none the less, they were fined.
After that blow, came the next one when they came to their house to work on salvaging what they could, only to find that someone had broken into their home. It was obviously burned down, what more could these criminals think they could do. You might ask, what was stolen? Pans. That's right, cookware. So, since these people have lost their security, lets lower them further and steal their cookware.
Has the world really come to this that a cable company would be so greedy they need to fine an elderly couple $800 for a cable box? Have criminals become so low that they need to break into a burnt up home and take cookware?
Comments:
The company is Cox Cable. They are the only cable company in our town. If you want television reception at all you have to get cable from them, get a sattelite, or go through AT&T. The couple is now renting, so sattelite is not an option, and AT&T ran a credit check and since the cable company has fined them, AT&T won't give them cable because they think these people won't pay the bill.
