The 9th anniversary of the September 11th tragedy is coming up. I can hardly believe that it has been 9 years already. I remember when I saw the news, where I was, and exactly what I was doing. This is the same effect that Kennedy's assasination had on the previous generation.

On September 4th 2002, President Bush declared that September 11th would now be known as Patriot Day. That is great, and it should be considered a National holiday.

However, choosing the name Patriot Day creates some confusion, as there is a holiday known as Patriots' Day already!

Patriots' Day is a civic holiday in Massachusetts that occurs on the third Monday of every April. Patriots' Day commemorates the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord - the first two battles of the Revolutionary War. Pretty important, if you ask me. Why Patriots' Day is not a national holiday is beyond me!

Patriots' Day is the day that the Boston Marathon is run, so it is often called "Marathon Monday", and it is celebrated in Massachusetts, Maine and it is an observed holiday in Wisconsin.

The s and the apostrophe are confusing! Please bear this in mind, though - Patriot Day and Patriots' Day are both special days that have significant meaning to our nation, but... they aren't the same! Use grammar wisely!

I have very, very fond memories of Patriots' Day from when I lived in Boston, from watching the marathon (my sophmore-year dorm room window was at the half-way point!) to hearing about colleagues participating in the early morning reenactment in Lexington. How silly to try to overshadow this important day by naming another day practically the same thing. I guess that there weren't too many people from the Bay State in the previous administration, though!

I remember there being some hoopla about it, but Bush ignored it, chosing to be uncreative.

I keep seeing posts about Patriot's Day, so I felt the need to point out the facts.

I did not know that Mass. had that day.  Lovely, thanks for sharing, and LOLL that Bush "chose" not to be creative : )
