Who gave you your name and why? Did you have a family nickname? How did you get it?
From the stories I've been told my name was given to me by my daddy in honor of an elderly German organist he knew. He said she could make an old pump organ sound like the music of angels! (It's sort of ironic that I learned to play both piano and organ!)
I actually had two nicknames. To my grandfather I was always his "Gidget". No one, including him, could ever tell me when or why he started calling me it. He just said from the time he first saw me I was his "Gidget"!
My other nickname was Karl. In truth it was only a nickname for my mom and friends. See my daddy's daddy was born and raised in a rural town named Grenoch, Scotland. While my daddy was born in the great state of Maine he carried on quite a degree of his family's Scottish brogue. Mix that up with the dialect and accent of the coast of Maine and there are lotsa words that don't sound quite like you might expect! My name is one of them! They blessed me with the name of Karla but when my father spoke it it came out "Karl". I'm not certain why, but my Mom and most of my close friends seemed to like it or something and it was stuck!
While there are some nicknames that I think should never be placed on anyone there are many more which are wonderful reminders of the folks who gave them to us!
