Dexter John...born 10/10/10 weighing in at 7lbs 8 oz and 20.5 inches long

Sat Oct 9th I was having what I thought were BH's all day.  My doula came over Sat night and we did some accupressure to see if we could maybe progress things along.  As soon as she started the accupressure I could tell that these were no longer BH's but were in fact actual contractions.  I went to bed hoping to get some rest and figuring the contractions would peter out.

3:30 in the morning I woke up to some pretty strong contractions that would not allow me to sleep anymore. I sat in bed and watched TV for an hour before I decided to get into the shower hoping to ease some of my discomfort.  When I got into the bathroom I felt a trickle down my leg and thought "Oh crap my water just broke" when I turned on the light I noticed it was not my water but was in fact blood.  I called my midwife right away and she rushed over and while waiting for her I passed a huge baseball sized clot.

I knew at that point the baby was coming today and I started making the calls to everyone who was going to be here.  My photographer showed up first along with a few of my friends and the midwifes'.  They took a look at the blood and the clot and came to the conclusion that the blood and the clot were from rapid cervical change.

At this point it's about 7 in the morning (I wasnt watching the clock so times are just a guess) and my doula has me sit on a chair so she can give me a massage hoping to ease some of my discomfort...it works for a little bit and I then decide I want to hop back in the shower.  Once I got back in the shower things kicked into high gear.  I was in there about 15 mins when I HAD to get into the birth tub.  Once i got in the birth tub I was able to deal with the contractions easier and I figured we still had a few hours to go.

40 or so minutes after I get into the tub I am in transition and in some serious pain.  It felt like my pubic bone was splitting in half....making this the most painful and intense labor I have ever had.  I know at 1 point I told my husband he was getting a vasectomy and that my midwife should learn to do epidurals at home and that I wish we lived in Canada so I could have Nitrous.  At this point I know I am deep in transition and tell my midwife as much.  She says to everyone "she is going to be pushy in 2 more contractions" and boy was she right.  2 more INTENSE contractions and I NEEDED to push but couldnt seem to get on top of it.  My midwife told me to put my leg up and I keep telling her "I cant, I cant" I finally somehow manage to get in a position to push and start pushing.

I had asked previously that my midwife catch the baby this time because my daughter was so wrapped in the cord that I was afraid of that happening again.  While I am pushing my midwife was guarding my pernium and for the first time out of 5 births I felt the ring of fire.  Holy hell I screamed.. pushed and screamed and finally he was out...born totally in caul which means he was born in the sac.  He was covered in the most vernix I have ever seen on a kid and there was some old Mec in the water but everything was great.  He pinked right up and was very alert for the first couple hours after the birth.  I had a 1st degree tear which they went ahead and glued together.  It was a wonderful birth and I cant believe I am saying this...but I cant wait to do it again!!!!

Awesome story.  Yes I can totally relate to the hell of a quick onset of transition and the ring of fire.  My entire labor was 2 hours start to finish wih my first natural VBAC. SO intense!  I am kind of gearing up for the same this time around.

Congrats.
