Fat removal surgery, or more commonly referred as liposuction, is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the US for the past couple of years. But despite the treatment’s popularity, there are still many false beliefs which may lead to unrealistic expectations and goals on some patients, according to Plastic Surgeons.

These are the most common myths regarding the liposuction procedure:

Myth #1: There is no need to stick to a healthy diet and regular exercise since liposuction can be performed anytime.

Fact: Any plastic surgeons would tell their patients not to treat liposuction as a substitute to weight loss treatments and even discourage them from undergoing multiple procedures within a short span of time as doing so can predispose them to higher levels of surgical trauma.

After the liposuction procedure, it is very important that a patient stick to a healthy lifestyle that should include a well-balanced diet and regular exercise to prevent weight gain. It is important to note that a 2004 study shows that patients who had this procedure but failed to stick to a healthy diet and regular exercise were three to four times more likely to gain weight.

Myth #2: This Plastic Surgery procedure can improve the overall health of a patient by reducing the risk of diabetes, heart problem, and other weight-related diseases.

Fact: Because this plastic surgery procedure involves the removal of excess fats, some patients think that this can improve their overall health. But contrary to this belief, the treatment does not make people healthier since it only removes the fats near the skin and not the visceral fats covering the organs.

With this, the most effective way to improve one’s health is to eat healthy, exercise regularly, and stick to a healthy lifestyle.

Myth #3: All liposuction techniques can effectively remove the cellulites or the appearance of a “puckery” skin.

Fact: In the traditional liposuction techniques, patients who have a poor skin manifested by the appearance of cellulites are usually turned down by most plastic surgeons because the treatment may even aggravate their condition.

Fortunately, there is a new fat removal technique which involves the use of laser which does not only liquefy the fats but also improve the skin elasticity to remove the cellulites or at least reduce its appearance.

Another advantage of the laser liposuction, according to plastic surgeons, is that the patients are exposed to a reduced level of surgical trauma, thus making it safer to remove more amounts of excess fats.
