My husband has a brother that is ill. He has visited with him recently and now certain members of my husbands family feel my husband should be staying with them instead of being at home with his own family. We live two hours away and this would cause a great inconvenience for us. My husband has medical problems of his own and doesnt want to feel guilty because he cant be there. How or what should his family be told?

I'm sorry. I hope his Brother will be okay. Tell them the truth...that while he would like to be able to be there, he can't...that HIS family and HIS health are his first concerns and those must be taken care of before anything else. Maybe he could offer to visit one day a week or a weekend a month or something like that?

I agree with the above poster.

I was in a similar situation myself over 10 years ago.  I lived 300 miles away and after a summer of driving down each week to care for the family member, going home on the weekends I just couldn't do it anymore.

Surprisingly it all worked out just as well after I told them I couldn't do it anymore. Life went on. The ill family member was cared for.

Don't let others do this to you and your family.

Thanks for the support. My family member has since passed but they knew my husband loved them. They had told my husband that he didnt want anyone with him when he passed but there were two of his sisters with him.
