Today is January 3rd, so it's obviously not New Year's Day, but I think for lots of people, today is the actual first day of the "real" year. New Year's Day still feels like holiday, yesterday was a Sunday, today is the first day of going back to school and work without the holidays looming or buzzing about us. Today is the first day many people will implement the changes they plan to make during the new year, their "start day" for resolutions. Today is the first day of normal life going forward.
It is amazing how much the holidays actually interrupt life. Almost everything about the world as we know it changes, from how we decorate our homes, how we behave with spending, the foods we eat, television and movies we watch, songs we listen to, how we behave towards our fellow man, it's a completely different "holiday" universe. Now we are back in actual world, the black and white day to day grind of trying to raise kids, earn a living, and hopefully improve ourselves and dream big. There is something about a milestone time like this one that feels if you miss it, you won't get back on the train. Diet now or diet never. Instill frugality now or be in debt always.
One thing I am certain of, even though things "feel" like do it now or be forever behind, every day we get up is another chance. Another try at the brass rings that life offers, another attempt at having that next great idea, another gift of time. Look ahead to things that matter to you, and make the most of this day. Tell yourself "I can do this", whatever your "this" is, and then make it happen.
Happy beginning everyone!
