Chapter 1: Yesterday - Once the darkness gave way to daylight, I could better assess the situation of the weather. It didn't look to awful bad out and the local weatherman said that we should be OK till close to noon. Since I had an appointment to get my car worked on at 8 am, I decided to keep the appointment and head for town.
The road had a layer of snow and ice in spots. Top speed going into town was about 45mph. All in all, not too terribly bad. Just took my time and was careful. I got to the service center and dropped the car off. The man who met me to take my car to the garage area looked at my car and laughed. " Wow, that's a pretty good layer of ice on the car." he said. I went into the nice waiting lounge where they had a cappuccino machine and cookies waiting for me. I fixed a cup of half hot chocolate and half coffee for myself. YUM
The manager came in and thanked me for showing up and warned me that I should try to get back home before noon. He said that he appreciated me braving the weather and handed me a new thermal coffee cup. I was excited about the new coffee mug because Missy had "borrowed" the other one I had. LOL After about an hour my car was fixed, washed and vacuumed. I was on my way.
I had a few errands to do and I hurried to get them done so I could head for home. It was about 10 am when I pointed the car towards home. The wind was beginning to pick up and it was sleeting but I made it home safely.
As I was chopping veggies for my pot of soup, I kept one eye focused on looking out the window to see what was going on outside. The sleet turned to a mixture of sleet and snow and the wind was howling. I got the soup all done and simmering on the stove and the dishes all washed. Just as I finished, the lights went out for a second, came back on, flickered, then came back on again. EEK, I wasn't ready to lose power yet. I grabbed every large bucket and soup pot and pan I could find and filled them all with water. When the power goes off, we don't have water. The pump can't pump it up out of the ground.
I called to see if Jerry had left work yet. He promised that if the weather got bad, he would take off and head for home. He was on his way. whew I didn't want to be home alone if the power went off. I was happy to see his truck turn onto our slick lane.
At 2:30...poof ... the lights went out. I went to the closet and got my "when the lights go out" emergency box. Lots of candles, flashlights, lots of batteries, an old fashioned telephone (not cordless) and my little transister radio.
The wind HOWLED and the snow and sleet banged against the window. It was scary! Jerry & I entertained ourselves by watching the birds try to fly and eat at the feeders. It was so pitiful! I turned to Chica (my cockatiel) and told her how lucky she was to be inside. She agreed with me. I wanted to open the door and invite the poor little birds in.
I hated to see darkness fall. We couldn't see a thing outside but we could hear it. We listened to the radio, tuned to an AM station where people were calling in and telling us what was going on with them. I was just dozing off when POOF, the lights came back on. HOORAY!! It was 7:30 pm. We could see out the big window now because the outdoor security light was on. It was so eerie. Everything was still and calm, like the eye of the storm. Soon, the wind started blowing again but not as fierce as before.
I finally drifted off to sleep, wondering what the morning would bring.
I woke up. WOW, I had slept in. I usually get up around 4am but I looked at the clock and it was close to 6. I tried to open the door to look out but there's a big snow drift in front of it. hmm, do I have to climb out the window?????
Chapter 2: Jerry & I had some coffee & got our showers before tackling the job of getting out the door. I was standing, looking at the screen door, trying to figure out how we were going to get the door open. DUH!!...I took the windows out and also the screen!! LOL

Jerry got a path shoveled around to the shed so he could feed the birds. Boy, they sure were happy to have some food!

Looks like they wanted to get into the shed where their food is! LOL
I bundled up and headed out the door with my camera. That will be chapter 3.
