My csection was originally planned for March 8th. I had an amnio on the 7th that came back with a number too low for lung maturity. So we planned another amnio for the next week on the 15th, again my number was still just a little too low. So we were going to plan the csection for the following week. I would have been 38 weeks along. I had been experiencing little contractions on and off for about 2-3 days. At 3am St Patricks day, I started having more intense and more frequent contractions. We called the Dr at 5am when they go to 5 minutes apart and they had us go back to the hospital I was scheduled to deliver at. They had me hooked up to the monitors and started me on my insulin drip just in case I was going to be admitted inpatient. Dr decided if my contractions were to stop, I would go home but if they continued, then he would proceed with a csection the next day, March 18th. However if I were to start dilating, he would take me that night. At about 10pm, I had dilated to 2 cm. Dr decided it would be that night, so by 11pm I was getting prepped for my repeat csection. My anesthesia was actually rather uncomfortable, with my first son, I didn't feel a thing, this time a student was trying to do it and he missed twice, finally the anesthesiologist took over and got it. By 11:41pm, still on St. Patrick's day, our son JASPER KINCAID HOVINGA was born. He was 10lbs 3oz and 22 inches long at 37 weeks 3 days. He was born with a full head of brown hair which absolutely took my breath away and I started crying the moment I saw him. :) Daddy cut the umbilical cord. It was really nice and thick and the placenta was nice and big. He had a little trouble breathing for about a minute but then was fine. I got to kiss him and sort of hold him for about 2 minutes and then they took him to the nursery to check his blood sugars and check him over. It took about 15-20 to get me sewn back up and cleaned up. I was back in my room for recovery by 12:15 am March 18th. My mother in law and father in law were there waiting when we got in the room. Jasper had one low blood sugar right after his birth, so unfortunately they did have to give him some formula but only once. His sugars have been perfect since. By 4:30am they brought him to the room for us and I started to breastfeed. He did great, latched on right away and has continued to be fed only by breast which is making me very happy. I had a very hard time with my first son and was really hoping to be able to breastfeed with Jasper. So far he has been one laid back, chill and lazy little guy. He barely makes a peep and has been sleeping a lot. The most noise he has made is when he had some vaccinations and when he was having some gas pains. My recovery has been much different from my csection 5 years ago. Last time I never took more then one pain pill the entire time I was hospitalized, this time I have taken the max they can give me and I am still in quite a lot of discomfort. My incision looks great though and there's no excess bleeding or clotting. We will be leaving tomorrow afternoon. :)
