Check Out Those Boobs
By Shanna Katz

This little article will serve as your friendly neighborhood public service announcement from Fascinations about giving yourself your monthly breast exams.

We know; when we think of breasts, we like to think of them as one of two things; sexual orgasm or milk producers…occasionally even a place to hang snazzy jewelry. Breasts make us think of nipple clamps or tingling creams. They’re perfect for playing with, whether alone or with a partner, and regardless of size, they can put forth a lot of pleasure.

All of this is true.

However, it’s also important to note these facts from the CDC and ACS:

*Breast cancer is one of the top 10 causes of death of women in the US

*Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women

*There is a 4.8% likelihood of developing breast cancer at some point in woman’s life

This said, vigilant screening and early detection have made the numbers of deaths from breast cancer drop while drastically increasing the survival rate. We are fighting breast cancer, and we’re not going to let it win.

What should you do? Lots of people think that their yearly visit to the gynecologist (where they will usually do a manual check, and then a mammogram after a certain age, depending on risk factors) is enough. It’s not. If you want to be on top of your sexual health, that involves a monthly breast self-exam.

How do you do a breast exam? You can do it on your own or with your partner, but you should do it around the same time every month, so that you’re not comparing the first day of your period one month to a day when you’re not even close to bleeding the next (menstrual cycles can change breast size and sensitivity).

Here is a handy dandy little card from Breastline.com giving you info on how to do the exam, along with pictures to help guide your way:

Breasts can be fun and fabulous, so make sure you take good care of yours (or help out your partner) by checking them out.
