If he was professionally diagnosed with bipolar disorder the doctor should have given you advice on what to do, i.e, meds, therapy, etc.  If you just "think" he is bipolar I would seek a professional opinion.  There are groups for people with bipolar disorder and I am sure for parents with kids suffering from it.  Check here on CM...someone out there will surely have advice.

his bio dad has it and my son has every symptom of early onset bipolar but he's also shy around new people. so when hes around family he's completely insane but around new people (ie counselors) hes quiet and reserved. they have told me that this is why its hard to diagnose in children.

I am so sorry for what you must be going through.  Try and talk with his doctor, if they diagnosed him with bi-polar they should be able to give you some resources for help.  Look online for groups you can join and they may be able to give you some advice or point you in the right direction.  Maybe try looking up books or going to the library.  Reach out for all the resources you can.  Hopefully some of the information can better help you cope with your son.  I hope things get better for the both of you.....
