Nonoluna's Take On Life

Unapologetically Me

Ah, the beauty of a clean oven. We all want one but the two best known ways of getting it might not be the safest.

If you have a self-cleaning oven, it's easy but there are several drawbacks. The first is the energy consumption. The second is the stink during the burn off which can be enough to turn you out of your house. The third is the danger of an extremely hot oven. If you have small children or pets, you need to be aware that they can get badly burned if they go near the oven during the self-clean cycle.

The other way to clean is using a traditional oven cleaner. I don't know about you, but using those cleaners freaks me out. The warning label alone is enough to put me off - dangerous to touch, dangerous to breathe, contents under pressure...this is not something I want to use or have in my home. Have you ever considered that those chemicals go down the drain and into our water supply or into a landfill to contaminate soil and water when you are finished cleaning?

If only there was a better way. Thankfully there is.

A natural alternative is to use a baking soda paste. You put it on and leave it overnight and might need to use some elbow grease but you can get a clean oven without the danger factor. That's worth it.

My alternative is a little different. I use an enzyme spray. I heat my oven to 100 degrees F, turn off the oven, spray, leave it for 5 minutes and wipe. No chemicals, little energy used, practically no labour involved and it's fast. That's my kind of clean!

You need to do what works for you. There are safe cleaning solutions out there - safe for your home and safe for the environment. It's a little thing that has a big effect when many make a change.

Can you come and clean my oven? You do a good job. I too am afraid of all the toxic things in oven cleaners and to lazy to turn on the self cleaner for fear it will smell up my home.
