I've seen a few posts lately about mamas thinking about giving up.  I thought this list might help push everyone to keep at it :)  If you are happy using formula, please ignore this post.  It's not for you.  If you feel guilty for not being able to breastfeed, please ignore this post.

I have read, countless times, lists of reasons to breastfeed your baby.  What if we switched those reason TO breastfeed, into to reasons NOT to artificially feed our babies.  I wonder what kind of an impact that would have.  Let's see what a list like that would look like, shall we?

  1. The American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't recommend it.  They recommend breastfeeding for all babies for at least one year.
  2. It isn't formula that promotes bonding between mother and baby.  And the release of the hormone Oxytocin has a lot to do with that.  Oxytocin is released into a mothers system while nursing her baby.
  3. Formula fed babies are sometimes, but not all the time, neglected when it comes to snuggle time with mom, compared to babies who are breastfed.  Only mommy can breastfeed, so breastfed babies therefor receive more snuggle time.  When you take into consideration the importance of kangaroo care, and the innate need for human touch...this one seems a no brainer.
  4. Formula is not a suitable substitute for breastmilk.  In fact, it can't even come close to touching it.  With new studies coming out daily on how breastmilk sugars line the intestinal tract of babies to protect against infection, that breastmilk kills rotavirus, and cancer cells...formula manufacturers would love to fool new mothers into thinking it's okay, and healthy...but the truth is, science is still figuring out why breastmilk is so superior....new information comes out all the time.  Formula companies couldn't trump nature if they tried, and tried, and tried.
  5. Formula feeding increases a mother's chance of getting breast cancer. (See #6)
  6. Formula feeding increases a baby girl's chance of developing breast cancer later in life.
  7. Formula feeding is associated with lower I.Q.'s, even 18 or more years later.
  8. Formula feeding requires $$, sterilizing and preparing bottles, buying more cans (often lined with BPA), mixing, temperature control, etc.
  9. Formula fed babies do not get what they need to help them pass the meconium that is in their intestines at birth.
  10. Despite what formula companies would like to convince mothers of...formula does not contain immune boosting antigens, antibodies, protective sugars, perfect nutritional balance, and does not aid in the proper development of a baby's immune system.
  11. Protein, iron and zinc are absorbed by breastfed babies better, and more efficiently than formula fed babies.
  12. Formula, which is either soy (bad) or cow's milk (bad, too) based, is not easily digested by a baby's still developing digestive system.   And much of the "nutrition" in formula, comes out the other end, and is wasted.
  13. Formula feeding does not help mama lose weight after baby is born.  It doesn't take an average of 500 calories per day to shake a bottle.
  14. Formula feeding would somewhat increase a mothers risk of postpartum hemorrhage, since breastfeeding actually reduces it.  The suckling of a baby on mother's breast actually helps to shut off maternal blood vessels.
  15. There is no formula for preterm babies that could dream of touching the perfect balance and nutrition provided by a mother's preterm milk, which is designed specifically for a preterm babies high nutritional needs.
  16. The World Health Organization (WHO) and Unicef call breastmilk an "unequaled" way of providing perfect food.
  17. Formula feeding increases the risk of a child developing Type 1 Diabetes, juvenile, insulin dependent.
  18. Formula Feeding increases insulin requirements for mother.
  19. Formula Feeding increases a mother's risk of developing ovarian cancer.
  20. Formula Feeding increases a mother's risk of developing endometrial cancer.
  21. Formula Feeding increases the chance of a child developing allergies.
  22. Formula Feeding increases the risk of a child developing asthma.
  23. Formula feeding increases a baby's risk of ear infections.
  24. Formula Feeding may increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).\
  25. Formula feeding DOES NOT protect against diarrheal infection like breastmilk does.
  26. Formula Feeding does NOT protect against bacterial meningitis like breastfeeding does.
  27. Formula Feeding does NOT protect against respiratory infections, but breastmilk does.
  28. Formula Fed babies have a higher risk of developing some childhood lymphomas.
  29. Formula Feeding increases chance of developing rheumatoid arthritis.
  30. Formula Feeding increases the chance of developing Hodgkin's disease.
  31. Formula Feeding does not protect against vision defects.

  35. Formula fed babies are at increased risk of cardiopulmonary disturbances.

  37. Formula fed babies have a longer pre and post fasting period related to surgery.
  38. Formula does NOT protect against hemophilia b. virus, but breastmilk does.
  39. Formula feeding increases the amount of sick days a parent will have to take from work.
  40. Formula fed babies have a higher chance of developing necrotizing enterocolitis.
  41. Breastfeeding can be a natural contraceptive.
  42. Formula feeding is a pain in the butt.  Breastfeeding...ready anytime, anywhere.  Enough said.
  43. Formula for one year costs in excess of $1200.
  44. Formula feeding costs the government and it's taxpayers over $500,000,000 per year in formula given to WIC  recipients.
  45. You have to heat formula to the right temperature, breastmilk is always perfect.
  46. Formula is not balanced perfectly for a baby's nutritional needs, as where breastmilk has the perfect balance of fat, carbs, and proteins.
  47. Formula is not a natural tranquilizer for baby.
  48. Formula feeding is not a natural tranquilizer for mom.
  49. Have you tasted formula?
  50. Formula fed babies are not as healthy over all as breastfed babies.
  51. Formula babies have higher medical expenses.
  52. Formula fed babies get to visit the doctor more often than breastfed babies.
  53. Formula is not GREEN.  Breastfeeding creates no waste.  None.
  54. Formula is often made of cow's milk, which surprisingly enough is designed for baby cows.   Not baby humans.
  55. Breastmilk may contain pain relief for babies.  Ever seen a bay bump it's head, and immediately nurse, and the whole world is right again?  I see this everyday.
  56. Formula is even harder on a sick baby's system, as where breastmilk is gentle, and easily digested.
  57. Formula feeders have to get up, out of bed, and go mix and heat bottles for baby.  Breastfeeding mothers, whether they co-sleep or not, get more sleep.
  58. Formula fed babies have to wait for their bottles to be prepared in the night, thus giving them more time to wake up, and that usually results in more time to get back to sleep.  Breastfed babies get more sleep.
  59. Formula feeding will likely require that dad gets less sleep, too.
  60. More kitchen cupboard space.  You don't need a cupboard for breasts.
  61. Formula is often recalled for things like bug parts, to jet fuel.  Not kidding.  Breastmilk has never been recalled.
  62. Formula can become contaminated with bacteria.  Fresh breastmilk cannot.
  63. Formula is often mixed with tap water, which is a health concern in and of itself.  Often containing fluoride, which increases lead absorption.
  64. Breastfeeding is animal rights at it's finest.  Less cows in factory farming conditions.
  65. Formula feeding does not offer the benefits that nursing does in jaw and facial muscle development.
  66. Formula fed babies get more cavities.
  67. Formula fed babies do not develop their speech as well as breastfed babies.
  68. Formula fed babies have higher rates of eczema.
  69. Formula fed babies have higher rates of gastrointestinal reflux.
  70. Formula stains are harder to get out of clothing than breastmilk stains.
  71. Formula contain GMO (Genetically modified) ingredients.
  72. Many formulas contain artificial growth hormones, meant for cows.
  73. Formula feeding, or the lack of breastfeeding, has been associated with multiple sclerosis.
  74. Formula fed babies lack the cognitive development of their breastfed peers.
  75. Formula fed babies have an increased chance of developing inguinal hernias.
  76. Formula babies lack in social development skills.
  77. Formula feeding does not delay menses after giving birth, so you'll be buying menstrual supplies much sooner than if you breastfed.
  78. I can't say for sure if formula feeding is a confidence decreaser in moms, but nursing is definitely a confidence booster!
  79. You can't squirt formula in an eye infection to cure it.
  80. Formula fed babies have much stinkier bowel movements than breastfed babies.
  81. Formula fed babies don't smell like breastfed babies.  They just don't.
  82. Formula fed babies tend to be fussier eaters as children.
  83. Formula feeding does not stimulate postpartum contraction which aid in shrinking the uterus back to it's pre-pregnancy state.
  84. You can overfeed a formula fed baby, but not a breastfeeding baby.
  85. Formula feeding moms have to pack a bunch of extra stuff in the diaper bag when heading out and about.  Nursing moms, pack less.

  93. Formula fed infants will have higher orthodontist bills later in life.
  94. Formula fed babies are more likely to develop into bed wetters.
  95. Bottles do not provide warmth for your baby.  Breasts can detect a temperature drop in your infant as small as one degree, and heat up accordingly.
  96. Formula fed babies have a higher incidence of Urinary Tract Infections (UTI's)
  97. Formula feeding does not optimize hand-eye coordination.
  98. Formula feeding does not protect your baby against cold sores like breastfeeding does.
  99. Formula feeding moms suffer greater degrees of postpartum depression.
  100. Formula is not what nature intended a baby be fed, and that is clearly outlined with the 99 above items.

ALL BABIES DESERVE BREASTMILK.  So before you sign up for Similac's band wagon, ponder the risk you may be taking with your baby's health.  It isn't a thing or two...I easily listed 100.  I wonder if reading the same lists we have all seen numerous times, turned around to be worded like this, if it will have any more an impact.  What do you think?

You missed one! Breastfeeding alters babies' genes to improve their immune system - so not only will your child grow up healthier, your GRANDCHILDREN will be healthier! That is pretty amazing. And yes, that is scientifically proven.
