My 13mo old son wanted and begged to have one of my M&M's, so I let him have ONE... One tiny M&M almost took my sons life, he went into anaphylactic shock from a severe peanut allergy that we didn't know he had. I called 911 and they were able to treat him before his airway closed. To the mothers/people, who believe it is ridiculous that schools, day-cares and other various children places don't allow peanuts/peanut products, I BEG you to rethink it, IT COULD BE YOU! I never knew how to feel or what to think about school banning peanuts, but now, I understand, loud and clear, a childs life rather it be mine, or yours or another's, is WORTH banning peanuts... Trust me, I watched my baby son come within inches of his life, you don't want to be there...

I want everyone to also know that calling 911 is never a bad idea if something doesnt seem right, had I not called my son would have died. He is doing well now, out of the ICU and we are learning how to readjust our entire lifestyle. PLEASE PLEASE RESPECT AND TRY TO UNDERSTAND THOSE OF US THAT HAVE CHILDREN WITH SEVRE ALLERGIES!!! It could be the difference of life and death for our children!

I'm so glad that you've had a happy ending! I agree that we need to be considerate about those around us and not just consider our own convenience and desires.

I know how you feel.  I am allergic to any nut products and the dust from the nuts can cause an allergy attack.  I am glad he is okay and my advice to you is read everything you give him (which you probably do now) because I have found a few food that you wouldnt suspect had it in it. My allergy is so severe, I can t make a pb and J for my son because if it touches me I have an allergy attack with the hives and all

I am also the mother of a child with anaphylaxis to peanuts (and eggs). It is truly frightening. I understand that feeling of lying next to your child in that hospital bed, all because of something other people take for granted. I wrote this journal a while back which may give you a bit more info. I'm so glad your son is okay. There are supports out there for parents of severely allergic children - one of the ones I rely on for alerts and information is Anaphylaxis Canada. I'm sure there is a similar organization in the U.S. I get alerts on a weekly basis regarding undeclared allergens in commercial products. I highly recommend registering with a similar organization. Good luck to you and your family.

OMG My son has a severe Peanut allergy too and I was scared for you.  I am so glad that they were able to help him.  We found out about my sons allergy around the same age.   We were able to teach him to introduce himself to people and tell them no nuts and show them his med alert bracelet.  I was so terrfied that he would somehow get peant food by some well meaning person.  He also carries around an epi pen.  Its a long journey and a lot of education.
