My high school son took the day off from school yesterday for Yom Teruah (Lev 23:23-25); we took the day off for resting and feasting, relaxing.  Some of the "special food" I picked up for the day were a bag of snacks: Bugles (corn snacks) since it was the 7th Rosh Chodesh.  (not exactly "blowing" a shofar, but to remember that.) We also choose a special dessert for each Rosh Chodesh. Lately Hershey's Chocolate Sundae Pie.

For Yom Teruah we remember the people making a teruah gedolah in Joshua 6:5, 10, 16,20 ... (the cohanim blew the shofarot, and the word teruah does not appear with the shofarot being blown, but with the "shouting" that the people did with their voices.)  And then יהוה knocked down the walls of Jericho, so we can enter the Promised Land. (We figure the people rehearsed for this for 40 years in the desert.)

So I planned for foods made in layers for us to consume to commemorate this great victory of Elohenu: featuring a meal with a prepared lasagna... and later Kit Kat candy bars. (yum). I made cubes of cheddar cheese (from a local whole raw milk dairy farm)  for snacking on (wall blocks).
Little bit of wine for the celebration. This year I picked a mixed fruit white zinfandel.

I've given my son the option to plan now for the last 3 Biblical annual appointed times that are also a day of rest
(Lev 23: 27,30-32,35-36,39)
which on the pagan, school day calendar correspond to:
Friday 9-9 for Yom haKippurim

Wednesdays 9-14 and 9-21. First and Eighth days of Chag haSukkot

I bought a tent at Academy on sale a several months ago. Not sure yet where I'm going to put up our Sukkah yet this year. It's still VERY hot here (more than 105F every day in the shade) and we don't have shade through the day in the front yard (grass is dormant from drought anyway). Back yard is a big area with lots of shade. Don't think I'm ready to actually go to the state park for more than a week long camping trip, (with the 2 days of rest, plus set up day and break down day: 10 days altogether?) It's been decades since I've camped. (Mostly my childhood experiences or in group outings like float trips or going caving.) Although we do have a local state park: maybe 6 minutes from home. And my son was a boy scout for MANY years. So he could teach me, but he HATES to camp now. He says he's not going to sleep in the sukkah even if it's set up here.

after I wrote this, I notice that God is leading me to look at the State parks, ever so gently with the next things I'm looking at...

I'm also wondering about where/how/if I'll be teaching my Intro to Biblical Hebrew language and culture classes on those Wednesdays for Chag haSukkot.

Last year the Lord led me to include in our home school day teaching some of the Hebrew blessings. It has been a real joy to see how these blessings always direct our attention to the Father in everything we do.

Shalom!
