A commons strategy for people looking to lose weight is skipping breakfast. However, this may be one of the worst mistakes to make.
Your body expects to be re-fueled a few times a day. So, when you skip a meal, breakfast for instance, you may be so hungry that come lunch time you are over-eating and making more unhealthy choices. You know the feeling ~ we’ve all been there at some point. You are so hungry you just find anything to eat ~ healthy or not.
On the other hand, people who do eat breakfast are more likely to maintain a healthy weight. Some experts believe that eating breakfast keeps your metabolism running as skipping meals can cause your body to go into “starvation” mode. However, it actually takes three or four days of not eating for the body to start tearing down.
Now, eating some breakfast may be better than eating no breakfast at all. But, if you are trying to get or stay healthier, you will still want to avoid foods high in sugar, sodium, saturated fats and calories. Foods like high calorie pastries, sugary cereals, bacon, sausage…
Breakfast should ideally include protein and plenty of fiber. This combination of protein and fiber will help to satisfy your hunger and more likely keep you feeling full until lunch time. Protein can come from such items as dairy, eggs, nuts or low-fat meat. High fiber foods include things such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
There are some people out there who just don’t like to eat breakfast ~ for whatever reason it may be! But, just because breakfast is considered to be your most important meal of the day doesn’t mean it has to be the biggest or take the most time to prepare. Start out with a hard boiled egg for example before heading to work. A few hours later, snack on an apple or a handful of nuts. You may find yourself then eating less for lunch and perhaps making a healthier choice.
Another great option for breakfast is a healthy protein shake. As Dr. Oz states ~ you can boost your metabolism by 25% by drinking a whey protein shake everyday for breakfast! A word of caution however ~ all protein shakes are not created equal. Become a label reader ~ look for low carb, low fat whey proteins with almost no sugar.
