Having been a day care teacher that worked with 6 week olds through preschoolers, I can tell you that that I loved those babies like I was their parent.
That said, I can name you hundreds of other baby teachers who didn't. I was an older empty nester looking to give love. They were young girls looking for a job and just trying to survive the boredom of 5 - 7 babies at one time (depending on age range). People like me cost more money for the company. The young girls are cheaper to hire, and there is no long term vested interest in working for the company, if you are staying with the babies for your work period at that company. The burn out is very fast in that position, and you are spreading yourself very thin among all the babies needs and the legal responsibilities of diapering every 2 hours, feeding every 2 hours, and rigid cleaning requirements that are much more grueling that home cleaning. Not to mention the constant documentation that has to be done.
I'm not saying that the babies in Daycare get less care than they need, but a SAHM Mom can give them more care and attention to the detail of their growth and development than a teacher has time or energy to give.
If I were a child and had the choice of a mom in a family to give me the quality of love and attention over the stretched thin time and attention that a teacher can give, I'd choose the first in a heartbeat.
Most moms and kids nowadays don't have the SAHM option. But the very luckiest ones do. And they are truly blessed if they have ever had an epiphany of how lucky their family is.
