“I love shopping. There is a little bit of magic found in buying something new. It is instant gratification, a quick fix.” – Rebecca Bloom, Girl Anatomy: A Novel

Do you enjoy shopping for your partner and children? As a mother, I love nothing more than making sure my family has everything that they need. Be that as it may, the fact of the matter is that it is getting more and more difficult to make ends meet. The current global socio-economic conditions are making it tough for families to survive on their current monthly income; wages are stagnating while costs are increasing. As a result, many families have to relook at their budgets to see what how much fat they can trim off.

Ways to save when shopping

The good news is that it is not all doom and gloom. If you shop around you will be able to purchase what you need at discounted prices. Here are several ways to find the reduced prices:

Plan ahead

Buying clothing at the beginning of each season is tempting. However, most clothing stores have season-ending sales where you can purchase items of clothing at discounted prices. I must say that I battle with this point. It’s easy to buy the clothing that I like now. I don’t want to wait for the end of the season. What happens if there is no stock left by the end of the season? To be honest, this is not a good attitude to have at the moment, especially if you have fast-growing children. It is far more cost-effective to purchase the season’s staples several sizes too big so that they will fit your kids when the weather changes.

Scour brochures, pamphlets, and flyers

Supermarkets, grocery stores, and furniture stores, for example, always have specials on certain products. It’s the way they attract people into their shops. The best way to shop for your monthly groceries is to buy the dry goods you need in bulk. Fortunately, many of these pamphlets are available online, so you can make a list of your requirements, check the prices, and purchase the items on your list at the advertised discounted prices. The good news is that many websites such as Mondo Convenienza that are updated in real time; ergo, you can be sure that you won't miss out on any specials.

Stick to your shopping list

It is very easy to succumb to buy what we think looks good. It has a lot to do with the way retailers market their products. Unfortunately, this is the quickest way to overspend. Therefore, make a list before you go shopping, don't shop when you are hungry, think twice before you make big purchases, and leave your bank card at home when you go window shopping. The advent of online shopping makes it easier to impulse-buy. Therefore, when you see something you like, add it to a wishlist on the eCommerce site, then think about whether you need it or not. I have found that 99% of the time, by giving myself a day to decide whether I need this item or not, I usually end up deciding that I don't need the product after all.
